for Concrete Decks and Slabs

Module 2: Maintenance and Preservation Techniques

for Decks and Slabs

2:1-18

Learning Outcomes• Explain common deficiencies of concrete

bridge decks and slabs• Describe concrete deck and slab protection

methods• Review the washing and cleaning

procedure for concrete decks and slabs

2:1-19

Share Your Experiences!•How many decks do you maintain that are covered in asphalt?

•Have you performed… o Epoxy injection?o Deck repairs?o Surface sealing?o Surface milling?o Hydrodemolition?

2:1-20

Concrete Deck Protection Methods• Washing and cleaning • Corrosion resistant reinforcing• Crack control and sealing• Waterproofing and concrete sealers• Cathodic and Galvanic protection• Overlays

2:1-21

Crack Sealing by Sealers• Crack sealing with penetrating sealers• Applied by spraying or pouring on the deck

and spreading over the entire area using brooms or squeegees

• Low viscosity penetrating sealers
