DEFINITION OF NON-FICTION

DEFINITION:

-Non-fiction is the form of any narrative, account, or other communicative work whose assertions and descriptions are understood to be factual.

-However, non-fictions are not always accurate – they are believed to be truthful by the author at the time of their composition, or posed to their audience as historically empirically true.

PATTERNS IN NON-FICTION-Problem/solution

-How to deal with greenhouse gases?

-Cause/effect -How does greenhouse gases take effect on global

warming?-Compare/contrast

-what are the similarities and disparities of a horse and a donkey?-Question/answer-Sequence of events in time order -Description, definition, or list

FEATURES-Often heavily illustrated with photos, drawings,

maps, graphs, charts, close-ups, and cut-away illustrations – look for captions, legends and explanations

-Use of different sizes and kinds of fonts and headings to highlight new words, the start of a new section, etc.

-Text may be broken into boxes or sidebars to provide added information
