Fishin’ magician to test his magic in PaterosWednesday, Dec. 1Boy, am I excited. I’ve been
invited to come along on a fishing trip to Pateros. There will be four in our party, and I have a feeling that we will all be catching fish. Our guide will be Shane Magnuson, and the trip is the result of his donation of a trip to the Icicle Chapter of Trout Unlimited. This gesture not only raised some serious money for the TU chapter, it also gives us four lucky anglers a chance to catch some steelhead. I have checked the forecast, and it looks like we are going to hit the weather right. Not too cold and hardly any wind. I will be taking my camera along and hope to capture some good video of our experience
and also some good photos. Be sure and check the “Picture Gallery” on my Website later this week to see the results of our experience. This is prime time for fishing on the upper Columbia River. I was looking back at some photos from early December in previous years, and boy the fish looked great. They were very bright and the numbers of fish available in this area of the Columbia should be
great right now.Friday, Dec. 3Steelhead fishing on the
upper Columbia is very good right now. The weather may be chilly, but the action is hot! I got a chance to fish with Bill Ballantine, Jim Passage and Rollie Schmitten aboard Shane Magnuson’s boat recently, and man what a blast. We fished near Pateros and were into our first fish about 10 minutes after we all cast our lines.
Bill Ballentine caught his first steelhead, and among the five fish he landed one was a whopper hatchery buck that weighed at least 14 pounds. Jim Passage has caught a lot of steelhead with his fly rod, but had never tried fishing
with a bobber and jig. He landed three fish and two were keepers. Schmitten and I each got a keeper, and the total for the day was 11 fish and five keepers. We may have made one pass without a hit at least, and one most drifts we hooked something. We were using the Yakima Bait Maxi Jigs baited with Shane’s special shrimp that have his “secret sauce” added to the brine. The mouth of the Methow is frozen and the Okanogan is frozen all the way to Omak, but there are a ton of fish in the Columbia.
Monday, Dec. 6There’s good news and bad
news on the steelhead scene in Central Washington. The bad news is that the Okanogan
River is now frozen from just above the mouth all the way to Omak, and probably beyond. That means that anglers are going to have to wait awhile to get at the steelhead in this river. It is not unusual for the Okanogan to freeze early in the steelhead season, and the thaw may not come until late February or early March.
When that happens the fishing on the Okanogan can be spectacular. The mouth of the Methow is frozen and that means the launch above the bridge is out of service.
The good news is the cooler weather has dropped the water temperature in the Columbia and the steelhead are really biting. Areas on the upper Columbia that are worth a try are near Pateros, Bridgeport and below Wells Dam. More good news is that the colder water in the Columbia has driven more f ish into the Methow and Wenatchee. There is evidence that there are lots of steelhead headed for these rivers. Steelhead fishing in December and January should be great this season.
