As the holiday season approaches, the family spirit is in the air. Soon the festivities will be in full swing and
our schedules will be jam packed with parties, gatherings, and get-togethers. Though the coming months are
filled with love and tradition, they are often also filled with so much business that we forget what we are
celebrating. Healthy Dent County is a supporter of the family unit. We want the families of Dent County to
get together and enjoy each other while having fun and being healthy. That’s why we strive to provide
events and programming that encourage togetherness and family bonding.
Halloween is traditionally filled with trick or treating, costumes, and an abundance of candy. This
year Healthy Dent County is putting on a “Scare on the Tiger Trail” fun run on October 28th at 6:00PM. The
run is approximately one mile long and will be filled with spooky scenes and creepy creatures. If you are
interested in registering you can pick up a registration paper at the Salem Community Center @ the
Armory. The fee is $15 for students and $20 for adults and includes a t-shirt, glow stick, and flash light.
Registration is due October 14th in order to get a t-shirt. In November we will be helping with the Turkey
Trot on Thanksgiving morning, and in December we will be having another community event which will soon
be announced.
These events are about much more than just physical activity. It is a chance for our community to
come together and encourage each other. It is a chance for parents to be a positive example for their
children. It is a chance to step outside of the day to day and create new memories with the people that you
love.
When Council for a Healthy Dent County was formed we knew that to be a healthier community we
couldn’t solely focus on the obvious, exercise and nutrition. While those things are obviously important,
health is much broader than that. Health involves having a support system, a safe place to lay your head at
night, opportunities regardless of income or social status. For children, health means having parents that
exhibit a healthy lifestyle and understand what that means. We strive to provide as many opportunities for
our community as we are capable of. We believe that there is power in numbers and that getting people
together to celebrate health is much more effective than people trying to do it on their own. We hope to
be a go to organization when people want to have fun, be active, and be healthy.
For information on upcoming events and programs please visit us at the Salem Community Center @
the Armory. You can call us at 729-8163 or email us at info@salemcommunitycenter.org.
Providing Opportunities for the Family
Susie Cahill, Fitness Director
Member Story: Karla Tiefenthaler
Our own Karla Tiefenthaler recently competed in Pink
Muscle Fest 2016 to benefit breast cancer- a figure,
physique, and bikini competition featuring men and women
athletes, held October 8th at The St. Charles Convention
Center in St. Charles, Missouri.
Karla started seriously lifting weights in February. She works
out six days each week from 1.5 to 2 hours each day at our
Fitness Center! Competing is expensive, and a good chunk of
that expense can be gym membership fees. She feels
fortunate that membership fees at The HDC Fitness Center
are affordable and the equipment is versatile.
She started training for this particular competition in August, and while there were changes in her body
composition, they came slowly. Her weight didn’t fluctuate more than ten pounds the entire time she
trained, which showed her that the scale is NOT the ultimate gauge of fitness! The most immediate
changes were in her mood and outlook on daily life. Karla felt
stronger and more in control of what she put into her body
nutritionally, which translated into a happier person for her family!
“Women give so much of themselves to the ones they love, that
many times they don’t realize they have no time left for themselves,
and end up feeling frazzled, drained, and sometimes a bit resentful.
Taking just an hour (or less if that is all we can spare) three or four
times a week to work on ourselves benefits everyone we come in
contact with!” says Tiefenthaler.
As a result of her fitness experience over the past few months, she
has renewed her certification in personal training, and hopes to share
this message with women in our area. She currently has a limited
number of slots open for new clients, and encourages those who
have not checked out our fitness center to take advantage of all the
center and its wonderful staff have to offer!
