2429 Market, Oakland

The project is located in a redevelop-ment area of West Oakland. The site fronts Market Street, a major north-south thoroughfare with an eclectic col-lection of warehouses, Victorian homes, and small commercial shops. The property contains an existing single-story concrete block structure set back from the street.

The client, an artisan/craftsman relocat-ing from New York, desired a mixed-use development to include a small residence for him and his young family, workspace and exhibit for his business, and additional leasable commercial space.

The design straddles the existing single-story concrete structure with two double-story buildings in front and behind, literally ‘filling’ the site. The dis-parate structures are linked by a multi-functioning, metal lattice with movable screens and shelves that provide dis-play, storage and access. The project’s material expression is reflective of both the surrounding context and the mod-est budget of the project – unfinished cast concrete walls, unfinished cedar wood and metal siding, and aluminum windows.along the perimeter of a com-mons area and above the main road. Access to the site is along the back of the buildings from a newly built road.
