Health WEALTHTalk to a pharmacist about vaccines
As fall starts to approach within the next few weeks, along with all the associated stresses with (finally) going back to school and/or preparing
for winter trips to warmer climes, here are some tips we can all take to keep ourselves in optimal health for the winter.
As health is mental, physical, and spiritual, there are multiple facets to optimizing one’s personal health; overriding all those is nutrition. There are people who don’t have the building blocks to keep
themselves intact dietarily. This includes not only the
ability to cut carbs and trans/regular fats out of
the diet in the search to lose weight but
to ensure they are
getting the right
things to keep
their bodies and minds
func-tioning at the
highest level through
daily
stresses. These include natural food sources of fibre, protein,
minerals and vitamins. What often results with bad dietary habits is people
have low levels of potassium, magnesium, and iron, which directly translate into muscle cramping and lethargy. Your body needs these things to ensure your brain and nervous system are running in top shape, and they are easily depleted.
Many people don’t recognize that basic nutritional health is the key to so many more things: from mood and achieving their personal and fitness goals, to proper functioning at work and in relationships. Proper levels of minerals are normally encouraged by a balanced diet, but if a person doesn’t know they are low on anything, and if they aren’t quite feeling full of energy, they should check in with their doctors for a blood test—especially people who do not eat complete meals.
This is especially important with elderly people. Supplementation for the elderly more often than not includes a calcium supplement, especially in those who are prone to osteoporosis, and Vitamin D is something we should all be supplementing through the winter.
Pharmacists are always available to discuss nutrition, personal supplements and recommend whole food sources of nutrition.
Flu season is comingFlu season is coming up fast (October to January).
People are reminded that pharmacists are now able to administer flu shots, depending on product availability. Supplies should be rolling out within the next three to four weeks. Call or visit your pharmacist to ask about getting your flu shot.
The government provides flu and pneumonia shots free for those 65 years and older, as well as those at high risk of contracting or experiencing complications as a
result of a flu.Pharmacists are also able to provide to the public travel and other vaccines such as Hepatitis A and
B, pneumonia and tetanus. They can also help travellers decide what they need based on
where they’re going.

HOT yogaPopularity of yoga heats up with benefi ts of infrared
It seems every corner you turn these days you spot someone with a yoga mat over their shoulder heading off to a class.
Yoga has become a popular alternative to traditional workouts because people are discovering it has health benefits beyond reaching your fitness goals. Most of us know the common benefits, like building your flexibility, strength and toning your body, but some advantages run deeper than that. They just might take a little longer to discover.
Yoga is known to improve your breathing, which is good for anyone with a physical lifestyle, but especially for people with a high level of aerobic activity in their life.
Yoga also helps you decrease stress and calms the mind, and as a result it is believed to lower blood pressure and heart rate, and in turn benefit people who struggle with high blood pressure or heart disease.
People who take yoga classes often talk about the positive changes they have felt as a result of yoga. There are a number of classes available locally—regular yoga, stretch yoga and infrared yoga.
Infrared yoga adds health benefits to regular yoga classes. Infrared heaters offer warming when light is converted to heat. It is safe and is believed to be easy on body tissues in a way other heat sources are not.
The health benefits are unlimited: from detoxification to increasing circulation, stress release, weight loss, alleviating symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, decreasing muscle soreness and inflammation, lowering blood pressure and stress and improving the immune system.
Infrared yoga can be healthy and beneficial for people of all ages, too.
Infrared yoga has so many benefits because the heat stimulates endorphins, creating a relaxed and happy state. The heat penetrates deep into the body tissue in a way that traditional heat cannot.
Give infrared yoga a try: not only will you see a difference in your fitness level, but you will not believe the changes it makes to your mind and body.

Consider the term ‘financial well-being’. What comes to mind?
Is it the ability to make superior financial decisions or fund an existing lifestyle comfortably? Do you equate it to a lack of financial stress or how much money one has in the bank?
To me, financial well-being is having the confidence that you can afford an adequate lifestyle in the future. Of course, “adequate” is a relative concept. Regardless if you are starting to save or are already in retirement, investing in conservative, dividend-paying securities can assist in your overall financial well-being.
Recent years of market volatility have now provided us with a unique vantage point from which to judge how this ‘dividend-paying’ asset class performs, and the benefits of investing in these stocks have stood the test of time.
What is a dividend? It is a cash payment made to stockholders
using net profits from a company’s day to day operations. Companies that pay their
shareholders dividends are typically large, established businesses that reside in
mature sectors of the economy (such as telecommunications, banking or utilities).
Why do dividends provide tax-advantaged income?
Because dividends represent an after-tax payout of earnings from the company, an income tax credit known as the “dividend
tax credit” is available to investors who earn dividend income through investment in the shares of Canadian corporations. The dividend tax credit (which effectively
lowers your tax rate) can be a considerable benefit when compared with fully taxable interest payments received from other income-paying investments like bonds and GICs.
By including dividend investments in a diversified portfolio, you can benefit from the income the
dividends provide as well as potential capital appreciation of the stock.Over the long term, dividends pay off.
Stocks that pay dividends have historically outperformed non-dividend-paying stocks over the long term.

Is your septic happy?Mind these guidelines and your wallet will thank you
Take care of your septic tank and it will take care of you. As a rule of thumb have it emptied every three years, although there are exceptions—and these will be explained.
The amount of people in your household and size of your tank dictate how often you should have tank emptied. For example if you have a 1000-gallon tank and four people with no garbage disposal, you should get your tank pumped every two to three years.
With only two people you can wait four to five years. To protect your septic field, cut down all large trees
and shrubs near the tank and drain field. Willow trees have a very aggressive root system and should not be anywhere near your field or tank.
Don’t flush or pour anything that is non-biodegradable down your drain. If you do they will not break down and can clog the tank, drain field and destroy the bacteria that aids in
breaking down solids.Keep heavy objects away from your tank and drain field as they
could compromise your system.Using environmentally friendly products such as dish soap,
hand soap and laundry detergent is ideal. There are also septic friendly toilet paper and wet wipes. Use a special product available at waste disposal companies to keep your septic system running smoothly. Adding a live bacteria annually will keep your septic system working at it’s best.
Some information on how to minimize the water entering your septic system: install a low flow shower, sink faucets,
pressurized toilet and eco-washing machine to name a few. Having your tank emptied on a regular basis
is an affordable way to keep your system running smoothly. The alternative? A new septic field, which can cost thousands of dollars.

Here are some tips to help you prepareThe weather has only
now started turning from beautiful
summer sun and warmth to autumn showers and cooler temperatures. Before we know it, winter will be upon us. Is your home ready?
Here is a handy winter preparation checklist to keep on hand.
Conduct a thorough inspection before the season’s first cold snap as part of your winter preparation.
Give your home a once-over and tend to winter preparation tasks and repairs before the year’s first sign of winter. Getting the exterior of the home ready for the cold winds, snow and ice is critical for keeping Old Man Winter out and keeping it warm and toasty inside. By being proactive, you’ll lower your energy bills, increase the efficiency and lifespan of your home’s components, and make
your property safer.Windows and Doors
Check all the weatherstripping around windows and doorframes for leaks to prevent heat loss. Replace weatherstripping, if necessary.
Examine wooden window frames for signs of rot or decay. Repair or replace framing to maintain structural integrity.
Check for drafts around windows and doors. Caulk inside and out, where necessary, to keep heat from escaping.
Inspect windows for cracks, broken glass, or gaps. Repair or replace, if needed.
Lawn, Gardenand Deck
Trim overgrown branches back from the house and electrical wires to prevent iced-over or wind-swept branches from causing property damage or a power problem.
Aerate the lawn, reseed, and apply a winterizing fertilizer to promote deep-root growth come spring.
Ensure rain drains away from the house to avoid foundation problems. The dirt grade — around the exterior of your home — should slope away from the house. Add extra dirt to low areas, as necessary.
Remove any attached hoses and store them away for the winter to prevent cracks, preserve their shapes, and prolong their life. Wrap outside faucets with covers to prevent water damage.
Shut off exterior faucets. Drain water from outdoor pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads to protect against pipe bursts.
Clean leaves and dirt between the boards of wooden decks to thwart mold and mildew growth.
Inspect outdoor lighting
around the property. Good illumination will help minimize the chance of accidents on icy walkways at night.
Check handrails on exterior stairs to make sure they’re well secured.
Tools and Machinery Bring all seasonal tools
inside and spray them with a coating of lightweight oil to prevent rust. Weatherize your lawn mower by cleaning off mud, leaves, grass, and debris.
Sharpen ice choppers and inspect snow shovels to make sure they’re ready for another season of work.
Make sure you have an ample supply of ice melt or sand on hand for walkways, and the driveway.Heating, Ventilating and Air
Conditioning Inspect the firebox and flue
system to ensure that they’re clean of any soot or creosote.

What is autism?Autism is the
fastest growing developmental
disability more common in children than cancer, diabetes, Down Syndrome and AIDS combined.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. The hallmark feature of ASD is impaired social interaction.
As early as infancy, a baby with ASD may be unresponsive to people or focus intently on one item to the exclusion of others for long periods of time. A child with ASD may appear to develop normally
and then withdraw and become indifferent to social engagement.
Children with an ASD may fail to respond to their names and often avoid eye contact with other people.
They have difficulty interpreting what others are thinking or feeling because they can’t understand social cues, such as tone of voice or facial expressions, and don’t watch other people’s faces for clues about appropriate behaviour. They may lack empathy.
Many children with an ASD engage in repetitive movements such as rocking, or in self-abusive behaviour such as biting or head-banging. They also tend to start speaking later than other children and may refer to
themselves by name instead of “I” or “me.” Some children with an ASD don’t know how to play interactively with other children. Some speak in a sing-song voice about a narrow range of favorite topics, with little regard for the interests of the person to whom they are speaking.
If you feel that your child is displaying any behaviours associated with autism, make an appointment to see your health care provider.
And consider this: Albert Einstein, Mozart, Sir Isaac

Newton, Charles Darwin,
Thomas Jefferson, Michaelangelo, Hans Christian Anderson and Emily Carr were all thought to have autism.

THE EYESSeeing health through
In the holistic world of health there are many different approaches.
Iridology is one such approach. Iridology is the art and science of reading the condition of the body and the predisposition to imbalance in the body through markings and physical makeup of the iris of the eye.
This may sound a bit far-fetched, but in reality it makes sense.
The eye is attached directly to the nerve plexus in the brain and the body condition is reflected through the tissues in the eyes when the nerves of the body are first formed or later stimulated.
Although iridology does not reveal specific medical diagnoses, it can tell the practitioner where there are areas of weakness, strength and inherent
constitutional abnormalities. Each area of the body is represented in a
corresponding area of the iris, which makes reading the body and art of seeing through the windows of the eyes.
When the practitioner combines what they see with the appropriate nutrition, lifestyle changes and planning, you gain a uniquely personal program that fits with the fabric of your specific physical makeup.
Iridology is very easy to learn and is as simple to do as taking a look at the map in front of you. Just don’t blink, or you might miss it.

All about dividendsFrom / 7 Even more rewarding to
investors than a steady stream of dividend income is a growing stock.
Why dividends now? Yield has always been a
desired commodity but in the current market environment, yield on interest bearing investments such as bonds is extremely low. As a result,
investors are now looking to more attractive, dividend-paying stocks instead.
Consider adding conservative, dividend paying stocks to your portfolio for your financial well-being.

Check the gutters and downspouts for proper fastening, and re-secure if
loose or sagging. Clean gutters of any debris.
Make sure downspouts extend away from the house by at least five feet to prevent foundation water damage.
