Oct. 14, 2018—Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks the rich young man to give
away all that he has in order to have treasure in heaven.
But he is unable to free himself from his possessions, and
so he goes sadly away. Does what I own keep me from
following Jesus?

PASTOR’S MESSAGE
The modern mentality tends to give up norms and exalt
carelessness: Do what you want, do what make you feel
good, you are free. At the same time, people are very sensi-
tive to their rights: you got to fight for what you believe and
stand for it. Today we are seeing these two simultaneously
lived out in society; you find people fighting for any kind of
rights. If they believe something and want to get it legalized,
they become immovable in their belief. It’s what happened
with these Pharisees: Moses told us to do it like that, you,
boy, don’t have anything to say. But Jesus shows that what
is legal is not necessarily moral. These guys just did not
want change because they used to take advantage of the
law to abuse their authority.
Years ago, I read a statement from a hollywood star in a
magazine, he said: “marriage is the grave of Love.” To re-
fuse marriage, to refuse social norms, is not necessarily
proof of maturity, but rather the choice to avoid serious re-
sponsibility, commitment. Today we hear a lot of stuff about
marriage. But we Christians. our belief, our firm belief, has
the most reliable basis: the Bible teaches us truths about
marriage; the beauties of marriage and its role in the broad
vision of the salvation. The sacred author teaches us the
necessary truths for salvation: the existence of God, the
origin of our soul, its nature and its destiny. I mention this
because different books present different truths which we
better call mid-truths. Genesis reveals the strict truth in a
way that anybody can understand: there is a creation, there
are man and woman, they are created to live together and
God is our creator. Instead of a grave of Love, Marriage, as
someone said, is the flower-bed of love, or perhaps the co-
coon within which passion turns into commitment. When
you are young and passionate, dating is all romance and
beating hearts and sweaty palms and butterflies in the
stomach. That young love is exciting, but it must bloom into
something greater. The sacrament of marriage is a grace
and a free divine gift which heals the impossibility of man to
love as God loves. Jesus proclaimed that marriage is indis-
soluble. It’s why marriage is for grownups, it implies careful
discernment and intention. Now, we should not use this
indissolubility of marriage to judge or to condemn marriages
in difficulty. Jesus reminded us of the big picture of what
God intended marriage should be, and though troubled
marriages exist, Jesus in his merciful will understands that.
Divorce and separations bring pain, pain for kids, for both
the man and woman, for parents and even for society. The
real problem Jesus wants us to focus on is this: the hard-
ness of heart. That is the illness of our society and of all
societies. Jesus pointed it out with the Pharisees. People
don’t want to open their heart.
Brothers and sisters let’s ask God for the strength to love.
I notice that you love songs; I recommend to you “Love goes
on” by Bernadette Farrell. After listening to it, you will under-
stand why so many marriages fail.
