the British soldiers in a brutal war that
led to our independence.
While independence was meant to
break the country from any colonial
yoke and hangover, it came as shock
that the all the tools colonial-
ists used such as demeaning
constitution that they used to
misrule Africans became a
handy tools to both Kenyatta
and Moi leadership.
At independence which in a
sense was a stillbirth there
became two distinct forces one
led by Jaramogi Oginga and
others who wanted resources
shared equally across all Kenyan re-
gions and another by ruthless capital-
ists led by Kenyatta who wanted re-
sources amassed at the center with
President as the main guy to consider
who and which region gets what.

It’s not easy to imagine Kenya
without Raila and what the
country governance would be
today without him. While many
young people today may not have the
benefit of history to understand where
the country is coming from
or what it went through, few
can connect the struggles of
Raila to the many freedoms
enjoyed in the country today
but much more the devolved
system that guarantees
equitable distribution of
national resources to all
corners of the country re-
gardless of the political
affiliations.
While many may not appre-
ciate ideological differences
between many political parties in the
country as many as they come, one
distinction that has kept Raila apart
from the rest is his undying belief in
social democracy where everyone
counts, human rights and rule of law.
A liberal democrat with rare courage
to face the unthinkable challenges,
Raila took up from where his father
left to see Kenyans realize the new
constitution as a means to free them
from the colonial constitution that
Kenyatta and Moi leadership so cher-
ished and used to reign havoc on the
Kenyan people.
When Jaramogi Oginga wrote Not yet
uhuru shortly after independence
some Kenyans felt he was too quick
to take fault with Kenyatta leadership
but was he not right. Many Kenyans
looking back today agree that indeed
Kenyatta went against the expecta-
tions of many Kenyans and freedom
fighters who risked their lives to fight
We proposed the
change of name Or-
ange young demo-
crats league (OYDL)
to ODM youth
league (ODMYL).
We deliberated and
thought that this
league needed a
name that is catchy
and one that does not
need an explanation
on its link to the
main party. So our
name will be ODM

When the youth leaders
from Norwegian politi-
cal parties came to visit
our secretariat. THE NEW ODM NATIONAL YOUTH
COORDINATOR
The central system that was
adopted by Kenyatta became the
hallmark of corruption and nepo-
tism that enslaved the country for
close to fifty years and make no
mistake the poverty gripping mil-
lions of youth in the country, bro-
ken infrastructure and uneven de-
velopment in the country is directly
related to the dislocations of unitary
system of government.
This state of affairs is what Raila
and ODM movement are struggling
to change. It is what defines us as a
political party.
Kenya as a country owes Raila and
other genuine third liberation pio-
neers who made it possible for the
country to attain new constitutional
dispensation that makes it possible
for once neglected areas of Tur-
kana, Lamu, Pokot, Kakamega
among others to realize the fruits of independ-
ence by way of devolution..
Their selflessness has now earned the country a
place in history as the first African country to
have a revolutionary constitution that can large-
ly be defined as peoples coup against wayward
leaders who use state power to manipulate and
brutalize their own people.
That people can be allowed the independence
of thought and exercise their free democratic
rights and still get their fare share of allocation
from government was just a few years back
unthinkable possibility but the danger of the
country going back to the dark old repressive
days is now more real than five years ago. It’s
only the forest that has changed but the mon-
keys who messed the country before have re-
grouped threatening to reverse the gains the
country has so belabored to have.

voting to ensure neutrality of
the process. After compilation
of the results the panel deliber-
ated on it and took a vote. We
therefore would want to create
a fully fledged secretariat un-
der him to carry out youth
activities country wide in order
to achieve our dream of crea-
tion of a strong, vibrant ODM
Youth League.

THE ODM YOUTH LEAGUE APPRECIATION
P A G E 3 R E S T I N P E A C E T A T A
Your Excellency our party lead-
er and all the leaders of our es-
teemed party, allow us to start
by thanking
you and all members of this
party.You have given the youth
of this party space to articulate
their issues through its leadership
by forming the youth league. Factu-
ally we have made a lot of progress
since the inception of the youth
league. Some of our members are
now in elected offices,others have
been nominated at different levele
and other are climbing up the party
ranks to take part in the party main-
stream leadership courtesy of the
ODM Youth League.

gress, ODM reloaded, cord strategic team
2013.In attendant was ODM Director opera-
tions Caesar Asiyo. Among the issues raised
were;-Luck of youth involvement in cam-
paigns, recognition and ODM’s shambolic
nominations.
It was resolved that we create a consortium
on Facebook and or whatsaap where we can
be consulting on party matters before posting
On 5th Nov 2013 we invited ODM bloggers
and youth lobby groups that helped the party
in the last election campaign. This was a
meeting that had never happened before in
the party.
The main aim of the meeting was to just meet
them and recognize the work they do for the
party voluntarly. To have a well structured
way of working together to built our party,
To popularize our ODM Youth League pages

that they take up there position in
the leadership of the party then
eventually this nation. We are on a
journey to make a vibrant youth
league in this nation that will make
ODM to be a party of the moment.
A strong youth league is a strong
ODM party. So far we had had 3
national officials who attended the
Program for Young Politicians from
Africa (PYPA). We have also had
over 112 youth leaders in 28 coun-
ties trained by CMD, through FES
we have a program that is now
training five youths from different
constituencies.
After the general election as the
youth league leadership we thought
our youth had not been fully in-
volved in the general elections ful-
ly, the youth remained to be the
security to the dignitaries and spi-
rants at all levels. To get out of that
culture we realized that we must
train our youth so us to make sure

On the 1st of July 2013,I assumed

Zuleikha Hassan was before her ten-

represent the youth.
Since then I have had an

some advices from my
predecessor and the
Secretary general of the
youth league John Keto-
rah.
I managed to set up a

been operating from, so
we have managed to negotiate
