The Olympics started a very very long time ago (over 2,700 years ago!)
in a place called Olympia, in Greece.

And here’s Greece
The Greeks came up with the Olympic
Games to celebrate the Greek Gods Zeus
and Hera.

Long ago, in Olympia, a flame was lit outside the Temple of Hera, using the
sun’s rays.
Messengers would then take the torch around the country to tell everyone about
the Games.
The Temple of Hera
Nowadays, a fire is started at the
Temple of Hera using the sun’s rays, just like how they did it long ago, to tell us that the Olympic
Games has started.
These are some of the Olympic Torches from the
past Olympic Games.
This is a map of all the places the
Torch will go before it stops in
London.
This is a picture of
‘our’ Olympic Stadium!
Some of the sports we used to have in the Olympics don’t happen anymore,
like the Tug-of-War competition.
Here are the sports that we
have in the Olympics today.
Here are some more examples of
Olympic sports.
Archery
The Paralympic Games happens after the Olympic Games. Sportsmen and women who
have a disability meet up and compete in these sports.
The Olympic Games is a really exciting time for all of us. We hope
you have a great Olympic experience this summer in RIO!
And remember, ‘The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part.’
