A typical work day
6:30 am breakfast of fruit, boiled egg or even spicy, Sichuan-style green beans
7:30 am obtain transport to client: client-delivered bus or full-contact sport of chasing taxis
8:30 am client meetings: trade business cards, company philosophy, photos, photos, photos, green tea service, and a few hoursof slow and deliberate communication via interpretation
12:00 pm Sichuan style lunch with clients, sharing personal stories and interests, toasting
1:00 pm obtain transport to hotel: repeat from 7:30 am
1:30 pm discuss, research, develop recommendations, develop presentations, translation
7:00 pm walk to dinner nearby or repeat from 12:00 pm with clients and more toasting involved
9:00 pm eyes glazed … discuss, research, developrecommendations, develop presentations, translation
11:00 pm sleep

Week 1: Building a new city – a digital city
Client: Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone, Bureau of Science and Technology
Challenge: Build "Tianfu New City" by 2015. This city will be the epicenter for the development of software and service outsourcing and science and technology. Aspirations concentrate on commerce, internationalization, fashion and livability. The city will be supported by all facets of any other typical city in the world -- metro, hospital, shopping, restaurants and more.
Recommendations: – Standards and criteria for a digital city – Examples of world class digital cities and what makes
them successful– A close look at IBM’s experience in helping to build digital
cities around the word.– Recommendations to focus on Dynamic Infrastructure,
Smart Transport, Smart Health and Smart Government
Result: Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone adopted recommendations and this engagement has evolved. IBM China is now working closely with the client.

Week 2: Evolving eGovernment
Client: Chengdu Municipal Informatization Office
Challenge: Improve upon the city’s plan to evolve its eGovernment platform with recommendations on how to:
– Integrate legacy systems in each government department– Create a citizen-centered eGovernment platform and services– Manage various types of eGovernment forms and data– Foster cross-department collaboration
Recommendations: – Embrace Smart Government– A close look at IBM’s experience in shaping Governments around
the word – City of Dortmund, Germany and Government of Denmark– Applying the One-Stop Citizen Centered Business Model – Component Business Modeling
Result: The recommendations were formally accepted by Zheng Jun, Department Chief of Chengdu Municipal Informatization Office. The office will focus on Component Business Modeling in their next phase of development.

Week 3: Young students of Dujiangyan
A visit to the Mayor’s office formalized IBM Corporate Service Corps commitment to help rebuild Dujiangyan.
Visits to 4th, 5th and 6th-grade students of rural Xiang E Primary and Puyang Middle Schools.
These student survived the earthquake of May 12th, 2009. Two hundred of their classmates did not.
New schools, new school programs are just one aspect of the rebuilding of Dujiangyan and the greater Sichuan Province.
Participated in IBM Education Support Launch Ceremony:
– Donation of IBM Reading Companion software and 40 headsets.
– Donation of 700 RMB to each of 10 students to help them buy books and other learning materials. Students were selected by academic achievement and economic need.
Taught English to 40-student classes by singing songs and playing games.

Recommendations:– Cooperation with government and foreign ICT companies– Cultivating soft skills and foundational competencies– Enhanced Marketing curriculum– Enhanced Computer Science curriculum– University Relations and Academic Initiatives
Result:– Neusoft Institute: Extended great appreciation for interactive
disussions, workshops and recommendations. Participation in Academic Initiatives.
– Jincheng College : Participation in Academic Initiatives. Adopted new methodology to develop T-shape and innovative students. Decided to develop a new state-of-the-art IT lab.
