TRIAD Corner
The Danvers TRIAD Council is a
partnership which includes the Sheriff and
District Attorney of Essex County, the
Danvers Police and Fire Chiefs, the Council on Aging
and supportive services, and seniors. Is your house
number clearly visible from the street? Per Mass.
General Laws Chapter 148 Sec.59 homes and businesses
must have their premises number visible from the street.
This law is a result of the “911 System” when the
emergency phone call to the dispatcher shows the street
address, but no other description. You may have
installed a number, but if your home has been repainted
this summer or has new siding, the number may not
have been put back up. The Senior Center has numbers
available free of charge and volunteers are available to
install them. Remember when you call 911 for an
emergency every second counts for the EMT’s to locate
your home as quickly as possible.
8/9 DanversCARES About You! - DanversCARES
is a community partnership focused on helping youth
and families make healthy decisions, reducing
substances use, and supporting a safe and healthy
community. Come meet Peg and Lyle, and learn about
the work they do in Danvers! This ranges from
coordinating opportunities for young people to bringing
the community together in a united effort to address
substance abuse at our Light the Night Purple
Walk. You hear about the opiate overdoes epidemic
problem in the news all the time, but do you know what
is going on in your own community to help drug
prevention efforts? Do you know what youth these days
are actually involved in? Do you have children or
grandchildren that might want to be connected with
some of our innovative programs? Join us for an
interactive presentation on DanversCARES and our
community partnerships. DanversCARES will offering
a series of presentations at this year's Timely Topics at
the Council on Aging. Coffee and Free DanversCARES
tote bags to the first 25 people!
8/30 Trivia w/Jen – Jennifer Tineo of Genesis Health
Care/Twin Oaks will be here for a morning of fun
trivia.

Medicare Coverage of Diabetes Supplies
Some diabetic supplies are covered under Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) rather than Medicare Part D
(Drug Plans). These include: blood sugar (glucose) test strips and testing monitors, lancets and lancet devices,
insulin pumps and glucose control solutions for checking the accuracy of testing equipment and test strips.
These products are covered under Part B as durable medical equipment and must be purchased with a doctor’s
prescription from a Medicare-approved supplier or pharmacy. Not all pharmacies realize these supplies should be
billed to Medicare Part B.
In addition, some pharmacies, especially those that are not part of a large retail chain, may not participate in
Medicare Part B and therefore cannot bill the purchases to Medicare Part B. Always ask if your pharmacy
participates in Medicare Part B before purchasing diabetes supplies.
For further questions regarding Medicare Part B coverage of diabetes supplies, please contact the Danvers Council
on Aging SHINE counselor at 978-726-0208 or call 781-388-4845.

We Need Our Volunteers More Than Ever!
Did you know that the 60+ population is the fastest growing segment of the population? The growing need for
transportation to our senior population is placing an ever increasing demand on our Transportation Program.
During FY2016 over 15,330 rides were provided to various locations including medical appointments, physical
therapy, dialysis, adult and social day programs, shopping, banking, errands and other social activities. Many rides
that cannot be accommodated by our vans because of availability could easily be accommodated in a personal
vehicle. In response to this increasing need we are piloting a new “Volunteer Driven” Transportation Program by
replicating similar programs running successfully all over the country.
Transportation
Medical transportation is available to Danvers residents age 60 or older, and/or disabled
Danvers residents under the age of sixty. It is suggested that residents make transportation
requests as early as possible for scheduling purposes. Due to high demand for booked
appointments, we will get you to your appointment on time, however, you may need to wait
for a return ride home. Individuals in wheelchairs can be accommodated.
The suggested transportation donation is $1.50 each way ($3 round trip) donation for appointments within Danvers
and $2.50 each way ($5 round trip) donation for appointments to the adjoining communities of Peabody, Beverly
and Salem. For ease of donations, we are offering seniors the option to purchase a donation punch card for $30. You
may purchase a donation card at the front desk.
Please call Lorene to schedule a ride at 978-762-0208.

Here are some tips to follow during hot, humid weather
Slow down, avoid strenuous activity. Do not try to do too much on a hot
day. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors will
reflect heat and sunlight and help maintain normal body temperature. Protect
your face with a wide- brimmed hat. Drink plenty of water regularly and
often, even if you do not feel thirsty. Attempt to stay hydrated. Limit intake
of alcoholic beverages. They can actually dehydrate your body. Eat
well-balanced, light, regular meals. Avoid high protein foods that increase
metabolic heat. Stay indoors as much as possible. If you do not have air
conditioning, stay on your lowest floor, out of the sun. Electric fans do not
cool the air, but they do help evaporate perspiration, which cools your body.
Go to a place where you can get relief from the heat, such as air conditioned
schools, libraries, theaters and other community facilities that may offer refuge during the warmest times of
the day. Check with your community for information about possible local ‘cooling centers’. Cover
windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings or louvers. Outdoor awnings
or louvers can reduce the heat that enters a home by up to 80%. Avoid too much sunshine. Sunburn slows
the skin’s ability to cool itself. If you are outside, use sunscreen lotion with a high SPF (Sun Protection
Factor) rating. Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle. Check on family, friends and
neighbors.

Book Club 5:30-7:30 PM—Led by Paula Corcoran No Cost
Join us as we launch our Book Club.—We will meet the 3rd Monday evening each month from 5:30-7:30 PM. The first
book we will read will be: The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls A remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a
revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and
charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly.
But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and
didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family. The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed,
and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be home
less even as their children prospered. The group will choose all following books. Limited to 10. Please call the center at
978 762-0208 to sign up. Light refreshments will be served.
