Part 1: Showcase of e-learning research at Leicester

Part 2: Examples of using new technologies for research

What research are you doing into online teaching and learning?

• Data– Online survey (260 returns)– Departmental visits

• Key findings– Used for content & administration– Pockets of innovation– More support needed on effective design

strategies– Tension between teaching and research– Usability issue

•VLE as a safe nursery slope

• Shift from content to activities

• Promote reflection and collaboration

•Mobile VLE

Great to have very personal feedback!

I felt that a lot of attention was paid to my dissertation

It also helps to provide a more personal touch and to feel better connected to my supervisor

It was more detailed and allowed a greater explanation of the comments made

Now I understand more about what you were trying to say than I did with the last set of feedback we got

The Audio feedback gave a good general overview and helped me to understand where I needed to make changes. The written comments showed me exactly where the changes needed to be made

How I kill time has been transformed by this device, as previously I would have just spent the 20 minutes playing games on my iPhone!

I commute to (work)... It's so much easier to take the e-reader rather than taking around a lot of papers.

I've been taking it to work and after lunch reading a few pages... Before with the paper version, I’d allocate my weekends for study.'

Blogs: I subscribe to more than 100 blogs in Google Reader

My own blog: I have kept a blog for around five years now, and it provided a useful resource for items I have commented on and drafts of sections of this book. The blog was also a means of posting draft content to gain comments and feedback, which could then be incorporated into further iterations of writing.

YouTube, Wikipedia, Slideshare, Scribd, Cloudworks: Sharing resources, and getting insightful comment.

Social network: my Twitter network is especially useful for gaining feedback, asking for suggestions and, on a daily basis, as a filter and collection mechanism for sharing resources.

Google alerts: Providing daily email updates on new content containing the keywords. This allowed me to find new resources, track conversations and stay abreast of a field which was changing as I wrote the book.

Seminars and conferences: my attendance at face-to-face conferences has declined, but I regularly attend or dip into conferences remotely.

There is still some reluctance to embrace twitter in healthcare practice. I think there is concern about confidentiality and inadvertently giving away information...
