WHO DETERMINES THE DONOR?THE DONOR MUST BE A VOLUNTEER!!!

BRAIN DEATH DONORS may only be determined by a neurosurgeon. (Two in the case

of a child)..

CARDIAC DEATH is determined by a medical doctor.

LIVING DONORS require extensive testing

UNDER NO CONDITION CAN THE DETERMINATION BE MADE BY AN EMT,

NURSE, OR ANY OTHER PERSON.

THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF DONORS:

BRAIN DEATH: ORGAN & TISSUES

CARDIAC DEATH: TISSUE LIVING DONORS:

Kidney, partial pancreas, liver, or lung, blood and bone marrow

FEDERAL LAW STATES THAT ONLY TRAINED COUNCELORS

OF THE AREA ORGAN PROCUREMENT AGENCY HAS THE AUTHORITY

TO SPEAK TO THE FAMILY OF A POTENTIAL DONOR

CONCERNING ORGAN DONATION !!!

FEDERAL LAW REQUIRES THAT 1. ORGANS CAN NEITHER BE

BOUGHT NOR SOLD. 2. THE DONOR MUST BE A

VOLUNTEER BY: INFORMING THE FAMILY,

SIGNING THE BACK OF THE DRIVERS LISCENSE,

DONOR CARD, OR LISTED ON THE STATE REGISTRY

ORGANS THAT CAN BE TRANSPLANTED:

Kidneys, can be transplanted into

two people. In some states liver

and lung can also be transplanted to two people. They may also be given by living donors

TISSUE DONORS can give the gift of sight, hearing, and save lives with blood and veins.

CORNEA: Distorted Vision, injuriesBONES: Crushing injuries, Bone Cancer,

Hearing loss.SKIN: Life threatening burns, bladder

reconstruction.VEINS: Heart condition repairing bypass.

TENDONS AND LIGAMENTS: Joint/tearing injuries, often sport related.

SOME SHOCKING NUMBERS

15,000 = Suitable donors who could have donated 8000 = Suitable donors who actually donated 28,000 = Lives saved by these donors.

7,000 = Suitable donors who did not donate.

6,441 = Lives were lost waiting for an organ
