ORGAN TRANSCRIPTIONS-ARRANGERS
In the nineteenth century churches served as concert halls. Recital programs oftenincluded a large percentage of transcriptions and music for organ vocal [or instrumental]soloists that complemented the "purely' organ pieces. For theater organs, an ocean ofarrangements consisting of popular tunes and patriotic songs was created.[The below listed transcriptions, generally represent a selected list, and not the completeoeuvre of the transcriber/performer.]

WILLIAM T. BEST (1826-1897)[more than 5000 pieces in his repertoire ]-Organist, St. Georges Hall, Liverpool wherehe made the organ function as a substitute orchestra; hence the numerous orchestraltranscriptions. Best also issued editions of Bach, Handel and Mendelssohn, as well as 1.C. H. Rinck's Practical Organ School. He was possibly the greatest organ virtuoso ofthe19th century and was noted for his exceptional pedal technique and phenomenal abilityfor improvisation. Successor to S. S.
