Whiteshell

tter Falls is found in the rusticenvironment of the Boreal Shield, but close tomodern conveniences like a resort store, restaurant, and marina.

Thepark accommodates a diversity of recreationaluses and is a great place to view wildlife. Keepyour binoculars handy for the many viewingopportunities that will appear.

Otter Falls campground is situated along thepowerful Winnipeg River. The river’s strengthwas so powerful during fur trading times thatcanoes were sometimes tipped over while tryingto shoot the rapids. Otter Falls was one of thelocations where rushing waters claimed acanoe’s provisions. The supplies remained onthe river’s bottom until underwater archaeologyconducted near the falls recovered numerousartifacts from years past.

The campground is within driving distance ofmany area attractions, such as self-guiding and

mountain bike trails. Pine Point Trail is a 8.2km self-guiding trail that consists of two loopsthat lead through the boreal forest, a specialspot for those looking for scenic vistas ofwaterfalls and rapids. Foresters Footsteps, alittle farther down PR 307, takes you throughboth a natural forest and planted jack pine andred pine forest. For something a little different, why not try a pontoon boat tour?

Visit the Whiteshell Natural History Museum- a log cabin that displays a superb collectionof bird and animal specimens of the borealforest. It is open in May on weekends only anddaily from June through August. Interpretersfrom the museum also give tours of theBannock Point Petroforms. Discover "bouldermosaics" in the shapes of snakes, fish, turtlesand birds, made centuries ago by Aboriginalpeople. They are considered sacred places wherecommunication with the spirits can take place.
