Gong xi fa cai!

First, i would like to say thank you to PP Jonie Gesalem for the invitation for us to see the spectacular first-ever Musical Fireworks Competition in Cebu City - Sky Symphony last Friday, 17th of January. It also featured the stellar, Cebu's first, Dancing Musical Fountain at Il Corso. Indeed, a night of fiesta celebration and family bonding.

Congratulations to our very own Sinulog Foundation executives- PP Ricky Dakay and PE Edward Gaisano for spearheading the successful Sinulog weekend last January 19. We will all be expecting a bigger one next year when the whole island of Cebu will be celebrating its 500th year on the foundation of Christianity.

As of today, we have 16 members attending the March 5-7 DisCon. Hope we can increase the numbers of attendees from our club for we still have seven days to register.

Lastly, i am happy to announce that we are currently working on our 4th Run-for-Gift-of-Life and very honored to present our RGOL Y4 Chairman, Rtn George Paraoan. Thank you very much for taking the lead and as promised we are all behind you on this. Further details as to the date and venue shall be announced very soon. So, stay tuned and looking forward to everybody's usual support.

announced that 3 members

of the Rotary Club of

Okayama Marunouchi will

be arriving Cebu on the

22nd. It is their first time to

visit our country and they

will be joining our luncheon

meeting on the 23rd. They

have no international

partners and may be open

to establishing one.

He also reminded us all that the annual visit of the Rotary Club of Yotsukaido is coming

up as they fly in on the 31st. As always, our fellowship night will feature the annual

calendar auction so please make an effort to attend and enjoy the fund-raising activity.

He also shared that Rtn. Bobong Castillo has been helping a Rotary Club in Kushima.

This club had previously undertaken a project in

Cebu and provided some assistance to typhoon

ravaged Leyte. They heard about the Taal

Volcano eruption and would like to donate

masks for the evacuees. They would like us to

write a formal request to formally begin their

donation process. We have to look into logistics

as the release and any duties will be our

responsibility.

Our guest speaker was none other than Rtn. Aris

Kintanar. Our club admin officer, Rtn. Mitch did

a splendid job in introducing him and managed

to bring the house down with his apt description

such as a Bachelor with emphasis on the B. His

pedigree in economics, specializing in

Quantitative Economics and President of Helpmate Manpower Services & High Trust

Finance. He cited his interest in anything biological female! He also cited the fact that

Rtn Aris was at one time a coach of the ML Padala Ladies’ Futsal team which won the

division runner-up under his guidance.

A brief backgrounder, our in-house economist correctly predicted the country’s inflation

rate as of the year end was going to be less than 3.5% in a bet with Rtn. Hector Almario.

His prediction was made early in the year when the trend was in the upswing so we can

only assume his pronouncements were made with some level of business intelligence! In

fact, I must admit I am probably the wrong person to be writing about his presentation as

I can barely catch up to the facts and data he shared.

His presentation was entitled 2020 Economic Projections. Unlike Rtn. Jun Castaño’s

annual report that was drawn from a multitude of data available at his fingertips, Rtn. Aris

explained that he relies on his network of friends who are in the business of gathering

data to arrive at his findings. Some of these include what was projected last year by major

financial institutions, as well as the conditions that prevailed in our economy at that time.

He shared information sourced from IMF which took into account our GDP vs. debt and

noted we were rated better than the US. Other factors he looked into was strong growth

registered in the past few years owing to sound economic policies made by the

government.

He did cite projections made for last year that predicted a rise in inflation due to the

looming shortage of rice supply across the country and weakening of the currency.

Having finally resolved their budget in the second half of the year, the government was

able to finally kick start the Build Build Build program. With the late start, we may see

greater impact in 2020.

In October, our inflation rate actually dropped to 0.8%. Even though we had an outbreak

of African Swine Flu, there was enough supply of pork to sustain the demand, so it never

affected our inflation rate as much as it was feared. Importation of rice also played a key

role in keeping prices down. Lastly, Aris did take the plunge and made his prediction for

inflation in 2020 to be around 3%, slightly higher due to the passage of the budget which

in turn will fuel the government’s Build Build Build program. This will result in more

spending and importation to support the program. Other facts cited included the fact that

we have more room to incur more debt without negative impact to our economy and that

our dollar reserves are also very healthy.

In all honesty, I am barely scratching the surface at this point and can’t do justice to what Aris shared. If you want to hear more complete and in-depth views covered in his presentation, I highly recommend the video shared at our Facebook page.

December 19 - Community Scout Youth Guidance Center Christmas Party 2019

The yearly CSYGC Christmas Party which is a joint project of Rotaract Club of Cebu and its mother club, the Rotary Club of Cebu, happened last Thursday from 11am to 2pm, December 19, 2019 at Community Scouts Youth Guidance Center, B. Aranas Extension, Duljo-Fatima, Cebu City.

Boodle fight foods with the 54 kids, 17 Rotarians, 6 Rotaractors, 15 Center staffs and number of guests, intermission number by the kids, dance competition, games with the clown, unlimited tempura, ice cream corner and granting of their wishes(from the sub-project named Christmas In A Box Project) are some of the part of the program.

Thank you so much to Pres. Mike Torres and the Rotary Club of Cebu for making this Christmas Party blastful! The kids, Rotarians, Rotaractors, staffs and guests really had fun.

We are looking forward for the CSYGC Christmas Party 2020!
