Protective factor for students-at-risk

Benefits of leveraging

peer relationships

• Adults often have limited access to happenings in the adolescent world.

• Peers are usually the first to know what is going on in their friends’ lives.

• Peers can alert adults early when they notice their friend is unable to cope with a crisis.

• Students reveal emotions on platforms that are usually inaccessible to adults.

• Singaporeans who attended school between the 1960s and 1980s may recall other ways teachers commanded obedience: using a ruler to whack the arms of talkative students, tossing chalk at those not paying attention.

• Today, however, educators are far more reluctant to use corporal punishment, particularly for minor offences.

• Restorative Practice—involves getting students to fix a problem they caused, work out how to prevent further infringements, and reconcile with those who have been affected by their actions.

• Schools have simply evolved to meet changing social needs

• To educators, the point is not how a child is punished, but that the child learns from the experience. “Just because we don’t twist students’ ears anymore, does not mean we have gone soft. We are firm,” says Mrs Gill. She would rather her students be “guided by values” than “guided by fear of punishment.”

• We don’t need to publicise the disciplinary actions to the extent that everyone knows.” Even if a child has bullied other students, and parents of the victims demand to know how the school is dealing with it, they may not get an answer. “We hope parents can understand that by probing, they may make the child a victim as well,” Ms Sharma adds.

Conflict Management

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4

• Ensure the safety of the students involved

• Provide medical attention(if necessary)

• Conduct primary investigation

• Update parents of investigation outcome and conflict resolution plans

• Follow up with students on disciplinary consequences

• Inform parents of the incident

• Escalate the incident to the Year Heads or Discipline Master

• Update school leaders

• Conduct detailed investigation

• Develop conflict resolution plans

• Apply restorative practice
