St. Vincent de Paul
St. Vincent de Paul was born of peasant parents in 1581 in southwestern France. A bright child, hereceived an education through his poor parent’s great sacrifices and was ordained a priest at the tenderage of 19. While returning to Toulouse from Marseille, he was captured by North African pirates andspent two years in slavery in Tunis, escaping, with the help of his owner’s Christian wife. This musthave had a profound affect on him. After a short time studying in Rome, he returned to France where hedid pastoral work in Paris. It was there that he began to focus on the care of the poor, gathering thewealthy women of his parish into a foundation that would care for the poor, and assembling a like-minded group of priests into the Congregation of the Mission, more commonly referred to in these partsas “Vincentians.”
Why He Matters Locally
St. John's Seminary, here in Camarillo, has had Vincentian priests serving in the faculty from the verybeginning, many of whom have helped out in parishes in the area. Among the Vincentians you mighthave met are Fr. Charlie Miller, Fr. Dick Benson, Fr. Cal Lopez and our own beloved Fr. KevinMcCracken. At this moment, only Fr. Greg Semeniuk remains to uphold their tradition of preparingpriests for the priesthood. A hallmark of their work has been the encouragement of their seminarianstudents to keep a strong focus on the needs of the poor, in the tradition of their founder.
Here in the Parish
The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Padre Serra Parish does beautiful, hands-on work with our neighborswho find themselves in distress. They keep families in people’s homes and then they keep the lights onin those homes. They sit down with people, listen to their stories, provide whatever assistance seems
appropriate. In amazing fashion, 100% of the fundsthey receive go straight to the care of the poor – theypay all non-charity expenses out of their ownpockets. This means that all donations you give themwill go entirely to the cause for which it was given. This is virtually unheard of among modern charities. They are all volunteers who have heard Jesus’ appealto care for the least among us. I cannot encourageyou enough to support them as they continue theirimportant and beautiful work.
