Living God’s Word
Lord, open our ears to hear the many ways you speak to us in our lives, to listen for the gentle sound of your voice that often comes to us in
stillness. May we be still and know that you are our God, ever ready and desiring to draw closer.

Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
Our PARISH CARNIVAL IS ONLY A FEW WEEKS AWAY. If you have not already done so, I invite those who are able to help us to complete the form found on page 5 of today’s bulletin, and return it to the rectory or in the collection basket next weekend. If you prefer, you can contact Diane Ryan at 201-456-9620 or Joe Verga at 201-247-2016.
Another way you can help is to donate a case (or more or less) of soda in cans or water in plastic bottles to be sold at the carnival. Please leave them by the priests’ garages, and notify us at the rectory when you do, so someone can take them in for storage.
Discount ride tickets are available for purchase, at $10 for a sheet of 15 tickets, at the rectory, Monday through Friday, except Labor Day, from 10am to 4pm. Ticket books for our Giant Raffle at $20 a book of 10 tickets as well as individual raffle tickets at $2.00 each will be sold outside after all the weekend Masses until the drawing on October 16th as well as during the carnival.
Next Weekend at all the Masses, a second collection will be taken to support the Catholic University of America. Please be generous!
Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor
Reflection on Today’s Scripture Readings
Perhaps you saw the movie The King’s Speech about the future king of England, George VI, whose speech impediment was so severe that it reduced him to tears of anger and humiliation. His wife, Elizabeth, found a speech therapist who was able to help him by using some unorthodox methods, such as rolling around on the floor, cursing, and singing. It is a profoundly moving experience when King George finally addresses his people over the radio and delivers a speech flawlessly, giving courage to his people on the eve of World War II.
The story in this Gospel tells us how Jesus helped a man to find his voice. The man whose tongue Jesus touched with his spittle (an element believed to ward off demons) came to speak “plainly.” Another word for “plainly” would be “rightly,” in the sense of correctly or truly. “Be opened!” Jesus says, and it happens (Mark 7:34). The man then spoke the truth of what Jesus did for him, and honored him.
As we hold firm to our faith in the Lord, Jesus calls us to both speak and act “rightly” in the eyes of the world, caring for those who have little and treating them with the same dignity as those who have much. We are called to imitate Jesus by reaching out tenderly to touch those who have been wounded by life and burdened by the rejection of others. Helping others to hear the sound of love can be done in many quiet ways and with little fanfare. —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!
“Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?” J 2:5
What is more important – being rich in faith or rich in possessions? Society tells us that possessions are most important. God teaches a different lesson. When we are rich in faith, we keep God first and experience true joy and peace. When we put possessions first, we soon realize we can never have enough and happiness is fleeting. When we put faith over possessions we truly realize it is better to give than receive.
Our Sunday Offering: Sunday, July 27, 2021 — $16,141.67 ~ July 26, 2020 — $11,118.20 (quarantine)

—James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R.
