The 3rd Introductory Course in Microsurgery of the Maxillo-Facial Region took place from 10-12 November 1980 in the Department of Oral and Maxillo~Facial Surgery of the Medizinische Hochschule Hannover. Headed by Prof. Hausamen (Hannover) and Prof. Reuther (Frankfurt), 20 participants from 6 different countries received an insight into the possibilities of microsurgery in the mouth, jaw and face. The first day involved lectures on the basics of microsurgery of the peripheral nerves with clinical examples from the N. alveolaris inferior, N. lingualis, N. facialis and N. accessorius. On the second

day, the participants were able to practise, in pairs, suture and transplant techniques under the microscope on the N. ischiadicus of the rat. Later that day, they heard talks on the theory of microvascular surgery and its clinical application in traumatology and for both free skin grafts and small intestinal transplants for reconstruction of defects after tumour surgery. On the third day of the course, participants practised microvascular suture techniques on the A. iliaca and Aorta abdominalis of the rat. An evening programme was arranged so that participants could strengthen social contacts with one another.
