PAINTS | DEFECTS AND REMEDIES
While painting or some time after the painting, you may notice some defects in the paintingUnderstanding the causes of these defects can prepare you well enough, before you start the paintingprocess and make the job easier. Here are some common paint defects and the solutions to remedy them:
Blistering:Blistering or Swelling of paint is caused due to trapping of air, moisture or solent between thesurface and the paint !lm. "he remedy is to remoe any unstable paint !lms. #llow the wall to drythoroughly, and repaint with a recommended paint. #lso, aoid painting under direct sunlight
Bittiness: Bittiness is caused due to dirt from the atmosphere or dirt on the surface or dirt from brushesthat are inade$uately cleaned or due to bits of dried%up paint that gets stirred in. "he &emedy is to use
clean brushes and paint on a clean surface. #lso, strain the paint through a cloth before use.
Algae/Fungus growth: #lgae and fungus can grow when the surface is continually damp and dirty.'nsu(cient fungicide) algaecide in the paint can also worsen the situation."he &emedy is to remoe algae )fungus by high%pressure washing. Wash again to remoe any residue. #llow the wall to dry before applyingwith recommended paint.
Brush mars:Brush marks are caused due to under%thinning of paints or due to poor application of the!nal coat of paint or due to poor $uality brush. "he &emedy is to ensure the paint is applied using the rightiscosity and a good brush.
Chi!!ing:*hipping of paint !lm is due to e+cessie use of putty or due to ery thick coat of paint odefectie surfaces. "he &emedy is to regulate the use of putty and paint.
Chaling:*halking occurs when ultraiolet rays cause the paint binder to disintegrate. 't can happenwhen interior paints are used for e+terior surfaces. "he solution% &emoe any unstable paint !lms. #llow

&oss o' gloss:5oss of gloss is caused due to poor surface preparation or due to presence of oil or due tooer thinning of paint. "he &emedy is to clean the surface thoroughly and take all recommended steps fosurface preparation.
Dis"olouration:#fter paint is applied, it may fade or discolour. "his is caused by particles in the walreacting with the paint when it is drying. 1iscolouration could also be caused by water seepage, or bycontaminants in metal or wood. "he &emedy is to repair water seepage. ake sure the surface is drybefore painting. #nd apply an alkaline%resistant or oil%based paint.
Flaing:0laking%o- of paint !lm is due to improper application of primer coat oer putty, and not beingcompletely coered. 't can also be due to application of paint on insu(ciently dry surfaces or due toshrinkage or e+pansion of a surface causing the paint !lm to moe. "he &emedy is to ensure that there areno gaps in coering putty with primer coat. #lso ensure that the surface is dry and clean.

Pat"hiness:6atchiness or uneen !nish is caused due to the highly absorbent nature of the surface. "he&emedy is to apply an e+tra coat of primer or use well%sealer.
Peeling:6eeling is caused by moisture on the wall, poor surface preparation or using the incorrecpainting system. "his defect happens on walls as well as wood or metal surfaces.
"he remedy for walls is to check and repair water seepage. 3nsure the walls are dry before painting. #nduse an alkali%resistant basecoat or sealer. 6atch surface defects with putty.
"he remedy for wood is to prime wood before painting, sand the surface and clean o- dust."he remedy for metal is to remoe all paint from metal before re%painting. 6rime the surface and re%coatwith suitable paint.
Sagging: Sagging happens when the paint droops downward after being applied on the surface. 't iscaused by the pigment separating from the paint and settling at the bottom of the container and comes asa result of insu(cient stirring or shaking during storage, storing for too long or under too much heat, ofaulty thinning. "he &emedy is to aoid storing in hot locations for long periods. Store in accordance withthe manufacturer7s recommendations and thin only with appropriate recommended thinners.
(rinling: Wrinkling happens when the paint forms !lm%like undulating waes. #pplying too much paint,or drying during high temperatures, or painting on a topcoat before the undercoat is dry can cause thisdefect. "he &emedy is to aoid applying too much paint. ake sure no paint accumulates round bolts,riets, etc. Wait until each coat dries before you re%coat.
Slow $r)ing:8on%drying or slow drying of paint !lm is caused due to humidity, poor air circulation, lowtemperature or presence of oil or grease on the surface or due to alkalinity of the surface.
