Pastor’s Corner

There's a lot to be afraid of today. In a way unprecedented in the history of the world, the entire globe is locked into their homes in fear

of an illness that can be fatal. Like the disciples after Jesus' crucifixion, locked in the dark in the upper room out of fear of the same

execution, we have entered a worldwide lockdown.

And it's true that we have to respect prudential steps for our wellbeing. As Catholics we wear seatbelts when we drive, we look both

ways when we cross the street, we take steps that are for our health and others.

But unlike the rest of the world, we cannot fear death. Intrinsic to our identity is the reality that death no longer menaces us. For a

Christian, the whole reason why Jesus came to earth, the whole reason why he died, was to break the hold death has over us.

This pandemic is a great moment for us to examine our hearts. Are we afraid? Are we afraid of dying? Are we afraid of losing our jobs

or security? Are we afraid of the world collapsing? Discovering fear is a revelation of where in our hearts we haven't surrendered

ourselves to Jesus yet.

Our second reading on this Palm Sunday, Passion Sunday, is from Paul's letter to the Philippians. Jesus, he says, did not hesitate to

plunge into death. Not only does Paul describe Jesus' confident entry into death, but he describes it as obedience, obedience to God's

will. Are you ready to put God's plan in front of your own? Are you ready to live a Christian life, a life of obedience to the Creator and

Providential Father?

It is marvelous that we are good Christians when life is good. How much better to discover when life is disrupted, when we are in

upheaval, when shadows menace, that we embrace Jesus and his cross, we embrace the Father and his will for our lives.

Hay mucho que temer el dia hoy. De una manera sin precedentes en la historia del mundo, el mundo entero está encerrado en sus

hogares por temor a una enfermedad que puede ser fatal. Al igual que los discípulos después de la crucifixión de Jesús, encerrados en

la oscuridad por temor a la misma ejecución, hemos entrado en un encierro mundial.

Y es cierto que tenemos que respetar los pasos prudenciales para nuestro bienestar. Como católicos usamos cinturones de seguridad

cuando conducimos, miramos en ambos lados cuando cruzamos la calle, tomamos medidas que son apropiadas para nuestra salud y la

salud de los otros.

Pero a diferencia del resto del mundo, no podemos temer a la muerte. Específico a nuestra identidad es la realidad de que la muerte ya

no nos amenaza. Para un cristiano, toda la razón por la que Jesús vino a la tierra, la razón por la que murió, fue para romper la retención

que la muerte tiene sobre nosotros.

Esta pandemia es un gran momento para que examinemos nuestros corazones. ¿Tenemos miedo? ¿Tenemos miedo de morir?

¿Tenemos miedo de perder nuestros trabajos o seguridad? ¿Tenemos miedo de que el mundo se derrumbe? Descubrir el miedo es una

revelación de dónde en nuestros corazones aún no nos hemos entregado a Jesús.

Nuestra segunda lectura en este Domingo de Ramos, Domingo de Pasión, es de la carta de Pablo a los Filipenses. Jesús, dice, no dudó

en sumergirse en la muerte. Pablo no sólo describe la confiada entrada de Jesús a su muerte, sino que la describe como obediencia,

obediencia a la voluntad de Dios. ¿Estás listo para poner el plan de Dios delante de los tuyos? ¿Estás listo para vivir una vida cristiana,

una vida de obediencia al Creador y al Padre Providencial?

Es maravilloso que seamos buenos cristianos cuando la vida es buena. Pero que mejor descubrir cuando la vida es interrumpida, cuando

estamos en conmoción, cuando las sombras amenazan, que abrazamos a Jesús y su cruz, que abrazamos al Padre y su voluntad para

nuestras vidas.

our students are actively engaging with their teachers,

signing their daily attendance sheets and continuing with

their Instruction in the comfort of their homes. We have

many grades on Google Classroom and this past week all

of our teachers held a Zoom, virtual class, so that they

could be present with their students.

A Pilgrimage in the Footsteps of St. John Paul II Join Mary Beth Bonacci, Catholic Author and Speaker,

and Fr. Blaise Berg, Pastor of St. Mary’s Parish in

Vacaville, California for a ten day pilgrimage to Poland,

May 12 -22, 2020, on the occasion of the hundredth

anniversary of the birth of St. John Paul II. Pilgrims will

HOLY WEEK AND THE PASCHAL TRIDUUM Sunday, April 5 - Sunday, April 12, 2020

“The days of Jesus’ life-giving death and glorious resurrection are approaching, the hour he triumphed over Satan’s pride, the time we celebrate the great event of our redemption”

(Preface of the Lord’s Passion II, Sacramentary). Thus the Church begins the one week of the year that we formally designate as “Holy.” Simple rituals can link the domestic church to parish church and Church universal. Enthrone Sunday’s palms where you pray, behind the family crucifix, even as part of front door decorations: “Christ reigns here,” they proclaim; “all are welcome!” During the first three days of Holy Week, ready Easter clothes, prepare festal foods, clean the house, beautify the yard. Late Holy Thursday afternoon, share Lent’s final meal before the Lord’s Supper Mass. Pitcher, bowl, and towel make a fitting centerpiece; perhaps conclude the meal by washing each other’s feet. On Good Friday, observe the paschal fast from food—from TV and computer, too! Then come to Holy Saturday’s Vigil with mind clear, stomach empty, and heart full of “holy anticipation” that bursts into living flame when the new fire is kindled.

Passion of the Lord

HOSANNA! “Hosanna to the Son of David;

blessed is he who comes in the

name of the Lord; hosanna in the

highest” (Matthew 21:9). With

these words the Church enters the

holiest of weeks, commemorating the passion, death, and

resurrection of Christ. When the people of Jerusalem cried

out with their “hosannas,” they were using an ancient

Hebrew shout of acclamation that meant “Pray, save us.”

The king to whom they were shouting eventually would save

them, but in a way that would be far from what they

expected. Salvation would come from the wood of the cross as Jesus hung there to bring freedom from sin and life

through death, opening the gates of heaven for all who put

their faith and trust in him.

LA VISITA A LAS SIETE IGLESIAS

El Jueves Santo por la noche, una vez que se ha

trasladado el Santísimo Sacramento al monumento y se ha

expuesto para la adoración de los fieles, existe la tradición

popular de visitar siete iglesias o templos. Dicha tradición

se inició gracias al fervor eucarístico de san Felipe Neri

(1515-1595), motivando a la gente a que al visitar los

templos para la adoración al Santísimo Sacramento

también meditara los siete momentos o “visitas” que Jesús

realizó la noche de su juicio. La meditación comienza

precisamente en el huerto de los olivos para concluir en el

Calvario. El hecho de que Jesús sea llevado de un lado a

otro, se recuerda en un contexto de fe y adoración su

presencia real en la sagrada Eucaristía. Para las visitas no

hay un ritual establecido, no obstante, la práctica popular

es rezar una estación al Santísimo Sacramento (Tres

Padrenuestros, incluyendo Avemaría, Gloria al Padre y la

jaculatoria eucarística) y luego dejar un momento de

silencio para acompañar a Jesús en su agonía. La última

vendría del madero de la cruz del cual colgaba Jesús para

traer liberación del pecado y vida por medio de la muerte,

abriendo las puertas del cielo para todos los que ponen su

fe y confianza en él.
