My dear Parishioners, Brothers and Sisters,
There is something about autumn that often makes us feel very melancholy. At the same time we know that
fall is a time for changes. We are very happy that we still have some beautiful, sunny days, but we are sure that
slowly we’ll get rainy, snowy, cold days…
All Saints Day. We begin November on Friday with All Saints' Day. We are accustomed to celebrating
just one saint, or a group of saints. But we know all of them by name. On November 1st we think about a huge
crowd of saints. And I believe that in this crowd we can find someone from our family, our loved ones, our friends,
our neighbors, priests from our parishes… I am sure that we can easily find in our lives someone whom we
consider to be holy. Holiness is not only a heroic life, but above all, holiness is achieved in the ordinary, simple,
and honest life. Holiness is fidelity to one’s vocation; holiness is faith in action.
All Souls Day – November 2nd. November reminds
us of eternal life. On November 2nd we will reflect on
the holiness of our life. And then we will pray for
those who have passed into eternity. We follow the
example of Judas Maccabee from the Old Testament.
Those who have gone to eternity cannot help
themselves; they are waiting for our help. And we can
help them with our prayer and indulgences. I
encourage you to pray for the dead.
To obtain the plenary indulgence from November 1 to
November 8, we must receive Holy Communion (and
have no attachment to sin, even venial). Holy
Communion must be received each day we wish to
gain the indulgence. A good prayer to recite to earn
the indulgence is Eternal Rest, though any formal or informal prayer for the dead will suffice. And, as with all
plenary indulgences, we must pray for the intentions of the Holy Father (one Our Father and one Hail Mary) each
day we perform the work of the indulgence, and visit cemetery.
Almost two weeks from now, on Friday, November 8th
at 7:00 pm in the church, we’re going to
celebrate Mass for those to whom we said goodbye during the last year. It will be a good occasion to think about
our family members and the loved ones who have already gone to eternity. On behalf of our Bereavement Ministry
members, and Fr. Dave I’d like to invite you for this beautiful Eucharist liturgy.
God our Father,
Your power brings us to birth,
Your providence guides our lives, and by Your command we return to dust.
Lord, those who die still live in Your presence, their lives change but do not end.
I pray in hope for my family, relatives and friends, and for all the dead known to You alone.
In company with Christ,
Who died and now lives, may they rejoice in Your kingdom, where all our tears are wiped away.
Unite us together again in one family, to sing Your praise forever and ever. Amen.
May Mary, Queen of All Saints, be a constant sign of hope and peace for us! I wish you all a wonderful
Sunday rest and a great week. I remember you in my everyday prayers, and I ask you to pray for me too, please.
May God reward you all the good that you do for Sacred Heart Parish.
With prayer, Fr. Jacek

RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
Today’ s readings invite us into prayer, into relationship with God. Because relationships feel more natural when we
know one another well, Sirach encourages us to know God better. In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair,
open-minded, compassionate, and attentive. The Lord will not delay, he says. Knowing that God’s help comes right on
time, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul
demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced because of his Christian faith, he
praises the Lord for rescuing him time and again. Today’ s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love
for the poor and humble. As Jesus tells his parable about the prayer habits of a Pharisee and a tax collector, our hearts
long to become as gentle as Christ’ s. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Friday’ s Solemnity of All Saints and Saturday’ s Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed fit well at the beginning
of November. The liturgical readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the
fulfillment of Jesus saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the Day of
the Dead. Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian
themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, principally by festive picnics
in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about
their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats. Flowers, music, lights, and feasting
assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a procession to the cemetery, and a
morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or bread of the dead. A toy skeleton is baked
into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is considered lucky indeed. The dead are not feared, but deeply loved, and this
joyful family feast points both to age-old customs and Resurrection faith. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

who humble themselves will be exalted. (Luke 18:9-14).

Are you or someone you know interested in becoming Catholic or in
learning more about Christianity?
Maybe you are not Catholic, but you are married or engaged to someone who is
Catholic.
Maybe you were asked to be a godparent for a Baptism or a sponsor for a
quinceañera.
Maybe you were baptized at an early age, but have not yet received the Sacraments
of First Communion and/or Confirmation.
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the process by which adults
and mature young adults join the Catholic Church. You do not need to live in Palos Hills to participate.
Please contact Elizabeth at (708)974-3336 ext. 250 or at droel@sacredheartpalos.org for more infor-
mation.

You can make a difference in the lives of mothers and their children seeking a
path to freedom from domestic violence.
Throughout October, Sacred Heart is collecting donations for domestic violence victims
and their children living in area shelters. This drive is sponsored by the Archdiocese of
Chicago Domestic Violence Outreach (ACDVO). Collection bins with the ACDVO logo are located in the Narthex and
chapel hallway. Thank you for your generosity.
We are seeking the following items: Diapers/Pull–Ups, Children’s New Pajamas and Socks, Full-Size Toiletries
(Shampoo, Deodorant, Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Feminine Hygiene Products).
For more information, contact Diane at (708) 824-1362.
October is Respect Life Month
This Year’s Theme: “Christ Our Hope: In Every Season of Life”
When a woman is facing a difficult pregnancy, the reaction of the first person she
tells tends to set the tone for her decision-making. How do we respond in a loving
way that is life-affirming for both her and her baby? First, prioritize listening over
speaking. Ask her about her feelings, thoughts, values, beliefs, and wants. When her
story is fully shared, it is your turn to provide factual information, in a loving and
caring way. Encourage her.
Help her set goals that extend beyond her due date to help her see life beyond her pregnancy. Reassure her that
she is not alone, and provide practical support. Pray with her, offering Christ’s love at a crucial life-saving and
life-defining moment.
Heartbeat International provides a directory of pregnancy services at www.heartbeatinternational.org/
worldwide-directory. For more information about how you can help, or about help that may be available, con-
tact Dawn Fitzpatrick, Senior Coordinator of Respect Life, Office of Human Dignity and Solidarity at (312)
534-5355 or dfitzpatrick@archchicago.org.

SHARING PARISH FOOD DRIVE
We have mixed news to report. Year-to-date,
you’ve donated more food than all of last year
(10,628 lbs. vs 10,410 lbs.)...and we still have
two months to go! The bad news, the previous
two months fell below last year’s numbers. Now,
bad news may not be the correct term to use be-
cause we are fulfilling three Corporal Works of
Mercy (feeding the hungry, giving drink to the
thirsty, and giving alms to the poor). But with
our family’s competitive nature, we never like to
see a decrease. So, we’re praying that we collec-
tively reverse this trend and close out 2019 in
grand fashion. Therefore, keep us in mind next
weekend (Nov. 2 & 3) as we conduct our Novem-
ber food drive.
Godspeed,
The Pizur Family

Drodzy parafianie, Bracia i Siostry,
W inne
dni wspominamy jednego świętego lub jakąś grupę świętych. I co najważniejsze – znamy ich nazwiska. 1-ego listopada
Świętość to życie wiarą każdego dnia, w każdej sytuacji…
Dzień Zaduszny, dzień Wszystkich Wiernych Zmarłych – 2
listopada, to dzień, który przypomina nam o życiu wiecznym. W
sobotę będziemy się modlić za naszych zmarłych. Podążamy za
przykładem Judy Machabeusza, ze Starego Testamentu. Ci,
A my możemy im pomóc naszymi modlitwami
Ogólne warunki uzyskania odpustu zupełnego: brak jakiegokolwiek przywiązania do grzechu, nawet
Amen.
Niech Maryja, Królowa Wszystkich Świętych, będzie dla nas stałym znakiem nadziei i pokoju! Życzę wszystkim
wspaniałego niedzielnego odpoczynku i wspaniałego tygodnia. Pamiętam o Was w moich codziennych modlitwach i proszę

Dear Lord,
There are young men and women far from home,
called to serve their nation in time of war; sent to
defend their nation in time of war; sent to defend our
freedom on some distant foreign shore.
We pray You keep them safe, we pray You keep
them strong, we pray You send them safely home…
for they have been away so long.
Bless those who await their safe return.
Bless those who mourn the lost.
Bless those who serve this country well,
no matter what the cost.
