The Histor y of Sai lboat Racing on Biscayne BayThe history of sailboat racing on Biscayne Bay
can be traced back to February 22, 1887, whenMiami pioneer, William Brickell, defeated fifteenother skippers in the area’s first Washington’sBirthday regatta.
More than 100 years have passed, and SouthFlorida has become one of the premiere venuesfor the sport of sailing, both racing and cruising. From the professional sailors heating it up offMiami Beach in international offshore competition,to the one-design hopefuls trying to qualify for aberth in the next Olympics, to the family cruisersenjoying the island-hopping of our Keys and parks, there is something for everyone.
We’ve enjoyed our annual Columbus Day Regatta and festivities for over 50 years, and recall years when over 700 boats sailed in thecompetition, with hundreds of support boatswaiting for them at the overnight rendezvous off Elliott Key.
Other annual destination events include theMiami to Key Largo Race, Miami to Palm BeachRace, the Lime Cup round trip to Fort Lauderdale, and for many years theMiami to Nassau Race as part ofthe SORC.
Olympic hopefuls train here year round, and the Miami OlympicClasses Regatta in late Januarydraws teams from around the world to scout out the competitionfor the next Olympic Regatta.
The Bacardi Cup Star Regatta
began as a tradition in Cuba in 1927 and stillcontinues out of Coral Reef Yacht Club eachyear as the sailors of this classic yacht meet forcompetition and camaraderie. Visitors appreciatethe sculpture on the front lawn which was giftedto CRYC by the Bacardi Company.
Since 1957, the Lightning MidwinterChampionship has been sailed each spring aspart of the Lightning Class Southern Circuit. And the past decade has seen the development of the fabulous Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta over the Christmas holidays. Thisannual event draws sailors from all 50 states andnumerous other countries to CRYC for a weekof intense racing and fun. Double that number ifyou count family members, coaches and friends.
Of course this list would not be completeif we failed to mention this year’s Park Grove2015 USODA Team Trials; the premiere optimist competition for US sailors.
Coral Reef Yacht Club is honored to host thesailors, family members, coaches and friends whoattend these annual events.

The 2015 Park Grove/USODA Team
Trials is finally here. USODA (United
States Optimist Dinghy Association) is
the national class organization for
Optimist sailing in the United States.
Team Trials is the premiere competition
in sailing for our country’s youth racers
aged eight to fifteen. It is the Super Bowl,
World Cup and World Series (all rolled
into one) of national youth sailing, where
the best of the United States’ young
sailors come to compete. Coral Reef
Yacht Club, which hosts many of
sailing's most celebrated races, such as
The Bacardi Cup since 1962, Star Worlds,
Rolex Miami Olympic Classes, Lightning
Mid Winters, Etchells Jaguar Series and
the Orange Bowl International Youth
Regatta, is also host to 2015's most
important Optimist regatta for our
nation’s youth. This year’s event, which
begins April 25th and runs through
May 3rd promises warm weather, the
favorable conditions of Biscayne Bay, and
palm trees! The event will be attended by
over 200 pre-qualified sailors from all
over the United States competing for a
chance to earn a spot on USNT (United
States National Team) and USDT (United
States Development Team) and to
represent the United States on Team
USA at the IODA (International Optimist
Dinghy Association) Worlds 2015 held in
Poland this August. Other top sailors at
Team Trials will also have the opportunity
to carry the US flag to Europeans, Asians,
North Americans, British Nationals and
to Belgium throughout the summer of
2015.
Think this is just a “kids’ game?”
Think again! The top five sailors will be
awarded custom made navy club jackets
with a pocket emblem of the event logo,
gold anchor buttons, and a world map
emblazed on the inner red lining - all
generously gifted by Classic Clothiers, a
South Florida custom clothing provider.
“When I was asked to participate in this
event by a long time client, it was a no
brainer,” said Fred Siegel, Owner of
Classic Clothiers. “I have specialized in
custom suits and apparel right here in
South Florida for over 20 years, and this
reminded me of the green blazers the
winner receives at the Masters Golf
Tournament,” Siegel recalled. “I am
excited to be a part of history in the
making, and I look forward to seeing
some of the youth sailors I measure and
fit for their custom jackets one day in the
Olympics, America’s Cup, and who
knows, maybe as clients in the future.”
Each of the attendees will also receive a
swag bag (sports bags donated by sailing
gear providers, KO & SLAM) similar to
even those given at the Oscars, with
custom HOO-RAGS (face sun protectors),
skin care products, sailing specialties and
even a few special red, white and blue
candies included to celebrate!
These races have garnered very
impressive sponsorships from some
major players in South Florida, one of
which is Terra Group and The Related
Group’s Park Grove development just

Coral Reef Clubhouse Histor yOur Clubhouse was built in the 1920’s. It was bought from the owner in August of 1955
when our Club was formed. This fine old home lent itself to instant conversion as a Club. The waterfront could easily be
improved. The Royal Palms bordered the driveway, the tennis courts, swimming pool, aviary andthe beautiful gardens and shrubbery seemed ideally suited to the prestigious character of thenewly formed yacht club.
It soon became apparent that additional grounds for dry storage of small boats would beneeded. A fifty foot strip of property, reaching from Bayshore Drive to the Bay,
was acquired. It already had a dredged and bulkheaded slip, and this madeimmediate dock facilities available.
This old residence was remodeled with a greatly enlarged diningroom and kitchen facility. The garage was rebuilt as a bar and lounge onthe lower level, and the upstairs was converted to card and committeerooms, with a suite reserved at one end for the living quarters for the
manager and his wife. As the grounds were improved, the tenniscourts and the aviary were eliminated in favor of parking
spaces and driveways. All the atmosphere of a small, eminent club
was evident when the doors opened for the firstformal reception and house warming on May 11,1956.
Upon entering the Clubhouse through the front doorway, one can see original decorations, called Armorials, looking over thefront door. Reading left to right, combined crosses of England, Ireland, and Scotland constituted original British flags. There were more than 30 variations initially.

The armorial flag above Coral Reef’s front door was almost identical to the final choiceused by ancestors of the Coral Reef gentlemen.
The Eagle emblem was used as a symbol of power and authority by Roman legions in 500BC and introduced throughout theRoman Empire, reaching England in 55 BC. It became a universal symbol ofpersonal achievement and orderly government. It is still in vogue, virtuallyworldwide, by military and civilian authorities of high rank.
Winchester Cathedral’s site, used by Roman Legions, dates from 55 BC. Circles represent earlier Roman officialresidences, courts, cloisters, et al. Actual cathedral was started in 1329. Winchester was capitol of England in the9th century. Ancestor of Coral Reef resident probably held office in religious institution or high civilian status when Winchesterwas political center. The circles on this armorial represent the residence in the City of Winchester of many religious, civil and military headquarters.
The fleur di lis embellished as shown in accordance with historical records identifies the person wearing, bearing or displaying this royal emblem as having a rank in the French nobility. Accordingly, it quietly announces that the bearer had status in the French royal familyabout 1520.
The crossed chain in gold (continuous links) is an armorial for the holder of a hereditarytitle (in English peerage) as an earl. This grants him lifetime access and control over a land grant. The title (Earl) and the benefits pass on upon his death to his oldestliving son. The rank, i.e. “Earl” passes in the same manner in full force in color and design ofarmorial.
The armorial over the fireplace: The custom still exists to display lineage armorial status.Above a fireplace, centered on the mantle, at Coral Reef the fifth in line hereditary armorial isdisplayed and identified by the purple ring with a red center which is a visual announcementthat the household’s chief is an Earl.
