Past Continuous TenseExplanation and Rules
How to use Past Continuous Tense
1. We use Past Continuous Tense when an ongoing action is interrupted by another action in the past or an action that already started before a certain time/event and kept continuing after that time/event.
• I was cooking when you called me. • She was reading at book at 7 yesterday. • They were drinking coee when I saw them at the café. • The kids were playing in the garden at 10 this morning.
2. We use Past Continuous Tense when we tell a story to describe things happening around.
• People were drinking their coees, talking to each other when Emily started to read her book. • When I went outside, the sun was shining, the birds were singing beautifully and people were walking happily in the street.
3. We use Past Continuous Tense when we talk about a temporary habit in the past.
• I was always smoking during my exam times. • She was talking a lot when she was nervous. • He was eating a lot and he was wasting his time doing nothing.
