Early life• Paul Rand was born on

August 15, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York.

• His first name was Peretz Rosenbaum later changed to Paul Rand.

• He painted signs for his father’s store and for school events.

• Attended Manhattan’s Harren High School and took night classes at Pratt Institute

Early career• He started part-time

position creating stock images for a syndicate that supported graphics.

• Self-taught himself about graphic design by reading German magazines.

• Started to create corporate logos.

Paul Rand 4 Principles of Design

• 1. “A logo derives meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolizes, not the other way around.”

• 2. The subject matter of a logo need not match the subject matter of the business it represents. “The only mandate in logo design is that they be distinctive, memorable and clear.”

• 3. Presentation is key• 4. “Simplicity is not the goal. It is the by-product

of a good idea and modest expectations.”
