It is predicted that over 9,000 new ICT jobs
will be created in Australia over the next three
years,1 with growth expected to be fuelled by
new technological developments. With such
a dynamic market in play, it is important to
understand what your new workforce will look
like, and how new roles and skills are set to
change the way you do business.
To help you identify which up and coming
skill sets provide opportunity to transform
your business, and what you need to do now
to plan for the future, we have developed
our 2016/17 Technology and Digital Market
Trends Report. We have summarised key
industry trends and compiled research
from across the market, to give you an
understanding of trends to consider when
planning for the future.
Jobs and skills currently in demand
Since March, we have seen a spike in the
demand for network engineering jobs,
which have increased by 22%.2 Architecture
requirements also grew by 15%, as did
telecommunication jobs by 12%, and product
management and development roles by
5%.3 Recruiters across the industry have
also reported increased demand for cyber
security, customer experience, responsive
web development, digital strategy, cloud,

big data, and data analytics positions.4 We
are also seeing an increased demand for
ICT workers with business skills such as
relationship management, customer service,
strategic planning and contract negotiation,
reflecting the increased integration of ICT
with core business functions.5 Employers
however, are finding it increasingly difficult
to identify candidates with these skills, with a
recent study showing 63% of hiring managers
had more difficulty finding candidates with
business skills compared to technical skills.6
We are already starting to see a gap between
candidate skill sets7 and market demand8
(Chart 1.1), with this gap predicted to widen
as new technologies create new skill sets.
The importance of selling more than just the
role will become of increasing importance, as
competition for candidates with rare skill sets
intensifies.

Permanent vs contractor roles filled Q3 2016
According to ITCRA, 90.4% of ICT roles placed
in Q3 were contract roles, and a mere 9.6%
of roles placed were permanent9 (Chart 1.2).
This is mainly due to the increase in demand
for project based professionals. We may
however see a shift in numbers over 2017,
as permanent digital roles become more
prevalent in the market.
Days to fill
Across Q3, it took organisations on average
38 days to fill permanent ICT jobs, and 23
days to fill ICT contract roles10 (Chart 1.3).
Contract days to fill are down from Q2, where
organisations took on average 30 days to fill a
contract role.

Location trends
Although the number of ICT jobs in South Australia grew by 8% in Q3, approximately 60% of ICT
positions are still located in Sydney and Melbourne.11
Where candidates are looking
Advertised roles - salary analysis
The highest percentage of permanent and contract jobs advertised across Q3 offered salaries
between $100,000 and $149,999 (Chart 1.5). Jobs with salaries between $75,000 and $99,999
were the second most advertised.12

Areas of growth
ICT management, operations, technical and
professional workers are set for the strongest
job growth over the next few years,13 with the
largest number of new jobs expected to be in
telecommunications services. The rise of new
disruptive technologies and the uncertain
economic climate however, will see a shift in
skill demand. Existing technologies will see
increased use across a number of sectors,
while key emerging technologies (Chart 1.6)
are set to create a new wave of skill demand.14

Women in tech
Gender diversity continues to be a challenge
in the ICT industry. Across Australia, only
28% of ICT jobs are held by women - this
is slightly higher than the rest of the globe,
where women account for less than 25%
of ICT workers.15 The lack of women in
the ICT industry poses both social and
economic issues, with one study reporting
that global costs due to lack of diversity may
be in the tens of billions of dollars.16 Industry
associations such as Females in Information
Technology and Telecommunications (FITT)
have helped advocate gender diversity in the
industry, however the percentage of women
in IT roles is not expected to grow in the near
future.
