A monthly news bulletin
FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK
At the outset, a warm welcome to the incoming batch of B.Tech, M.Tech,
MBA and MCA students. As mentioned elsewhere this is the largest batch
to have entered the portals of the Institute. This is a moment of joy as a larger
section of the students/parents community have put their confidence on our abilities to
deliver quality education. I am sure, our faculty and staff colleagues will spare no
effort to make sure that we provide the academic ambience for students to enjoy and
excel.
This week I got an opportunity to speak to the 2nd year students who might not have relished the talk as much
as I did. It was some plain speaking from the heart. I told students that getting a grade of C, D or F is no longer
cool. Watching movies, FB, social networking, gaming, etc., are supposed to be light entertainment avenues and
not time guzzlers. Too much is injurious to academic health. The importance of a good CGPA (preferably >
8.00) opens up numerous avenues of opportunity in the final year and it has become the de rigueur for placement
eligibility. Domain knowledge is back in sharp focus as companies struggle to survive in the new knowledge
economy. A word of advice: cultivate a technology specialization at the earliest; a certificate course in any area
of your choice is immensely helpful. Our Course Coordinators M.Suresh, Pradeep Jena and Shom Das are fully
aware of their responsibilities and will ensure that this semester academic focus is paramount on campus.
The eIndia 2013 Awards to NIST for its Online Information Systems (OIS) is a culmination of a decade of work
by NIST Technology Consulting Services (NTCS). We are proud of this achievement. The river rafting team of
NISTians was truly adventurous. Wonder if anyone has noticed that a 25ft climbing wall is coming up at
Atrium?
Best Wishes, Sangram Mudali
FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
NIST e_news extends a very warm welcome to the students of 2013 batch to the NIST family and
wishes all the freshers a wonderful time and life at the campus. Life at NIST is not going to be a bed
of roses but will surely be very enriching and fulfilling. The institute tries every inch to mould each and
every student into a Citizen Engineer - an engineer, who is not only ready for the corporate world – the world
of business, wealth and success, but one who is sufficiently groomed and prepared to face all possible challenges
of life – the life of struggle, achievement and satisfaction. Education at NIST is all about experimentation, fun,
and accomplishment.
On one hand academics are taken very seriously with lots of assignments, tests, projects and others, and at the
same time students are also provided with all sorts of opportunities to hone their skills and sharpen their talent
through numerous clubs and extracurricular activities. NIST e_news, being the mouthpiece of the institute, has
recorded many success stories of students, be it their paper presentations abroad, research
paper publications in International Journals, best project award, or release of their music
album, trekking to a height of 14800 ft above sea-level or winning of the Champions’ Trophy
for the college. The newsletter wants its pages to be filled with more such stories from the
present batch of students. After all great colleges are those who can tell great stories.

ORIENTATION DAY FOR 1ST YEAR STUDENTSNIST welcomed the 1st year students of B.
Tech., MCA, MBA, and M. Tech to its family
on 5th August 2013. This batch is the largest
batch of the institute with an intake of more
than 1000 students in its Undergraduate and
Postgraduate Programmes.
Prof Sangram Mudali, Director, NIST while
addressing the new entrants emphasised on
the role of the institute in preparing the students
to become citizen engineers and stand unique
among the millions of engineers graduating
every year. Prof Geetika Mudali, Placement
Director shared her experiences with industry and
the changing trends and requirements of placement.
The students were shown a powerpoint presentation
on the journey of the institution since 1996.
NIST is known for its number of clubs where
students hone their talent and showcase their
creativity. The newbeis, on their very first day at
the college, were introduced to the host of clubs
and their activities.
Orientation Programme on Basics for Freshers 2013The Orientation Programme on Basics for Freshers, 2013 was organised this year as usual with the high hope
of widening the horizons of the new batch of B.Tech., MBA, and MCA students who chose the NIST to be
their alma mater. As ever, NIST has been jostling with strategies of infusing its students with new innovative
ideas in different spheres of life. It wants to maintain the tall order of the IITs and such foreign Universities like
Stanford, UPENN, Houston and others in matters of reaching out to the students with fresh cognitive frontiers.
Hence, on the 6th Aug. 2013, the Orientation Programme on Basics for Freshers was inaugurated by the
After 18 months of severe slowdown in the IT market all over the world the companies are gradually
getting back on track. The leading IT companies of India & abroad chose to take necessary but harsh
steps and the entire world has witnessed lot of economic reforms in the past 18
months. The top IT companies have again started making steady progress & earning profits
for the last couple of months which motivated the leaders to plan and go ahead with the
campus recruitment of the graduating batch of 2014 from all over India. This is a great news
for the top Engineering Institutions like NIST.
Our final year students are working very hard for the past couple of months to prepare
themselves to face the challenges of the recruitment processes of the top IT companies in
India. All the NISTians are eagerly waiting & praying for their grand success in the
forthcoming placement season. The final year students are the torch-bearers of NIST’s success. I am confident
that they will give their hundred percent and perform according to the expectations. The previous batches who
graduated in 2008, 09, 10, 11 & 12 have broken old records and created history by getting themselves placed in
the top MNCs in huge numbers.
I do believe that the graduating batch of 2014 will also follow their footsteps to break all the previous campus
placement records by reaching the highest numbers in campus placements in Odisha.
I wish the final year students all the best! Geetika Mudali

A CONVERSATION TO REMEMBER -THE NEW NOMENCLATURE
Ms Shailaja Pandey, B. Tech. 5th Sem., Team e_news
Hello dear readers! Time for some information:The Latin term nomenclatura refers togiving names. Don’t worry! This time you will not read anything about etymologybut this is just to say that your and only yours, A CONVERSATION TO REMEMBER is
going to give itself a nickname. This name comes from a combination of few of its words ACONVERSATION TO REMEMBER, ‘version’ which means change, new...
You know, every time that Version goes for an approval of the article, it is always bombarded with expectationsfor a student-oriented article. So for a change, listening to them, Version presents – ‘The New Nomenclature’.
The New Nomenclature is not about cats in the mess, definitely not about food. If you think it can be aboutthe 100 minute classes or about the the amount of effort put in by students in writing their lab records (asprice of lab record is inversely proportional to the number of pages used), then my dear friends, version isgoing to dishearten you.
It is something for which we flock to the “TECH MALL”(again a peculiar nomenclature in itself), something thatisn’t controlled by the mall co-owner! It is the monthly tariff plans of different mobile service providers….notexactly monthly, but a 14/28 day mobile tariff plan which is the new nomenclature for the fortnight/month.Some quick calculations:
1 new month=28 days; remaining days=365-(12*28) =29 days i.e., one new month. So in a year, weactually pay for a month more that is not on calendar!
Even more perilous is the lift nomenclature. Version went to a college and found itself searching for a pit tohide its face when few “known humans”(friends before they started the embarrassing conversation) werediscussing that they will have to climb a floor as the lift there had numbers-0,1,2,3 and 4 whereas theywanted to go to the 5th floor(as per the prevalent nomenclature 1,2,3,4,5). The others who were “unknownhumans” smirked and Version…pretended as if it does not know what is going on.
And here comes the worst of all,”LYT LO”. Mind it- hear the word, do not listen to it. Today if someone sayslyt lo, they are taking their careers lightly, the expectation of their family lightly and above all even theirexistence lightly. Imagine the scenario if Mother earth says she wants to take “lyt lo”. How would it feelfloating around with no direction? We would never have been here had Newton taken the apple that fell onhim lightly, thanked God and relished it.
Thus a whole lot of dangerous nomenclature and even more treacherous are their after-effects. So time forthe golden words of Version-“If you can’t change the ills around you, do not atleast accept them”. The tariffpacks have this fortnight/month new nomenclature but reality is different. The kindergarten children will stillbe taught that a month equals 30/31 days.Whatever you see around you, do not forget that nomenclatureof floors follow the whole number system(0,1,2….) and not the natural number system(1,2,3…). And lytlo…..if you take it “lyt“then you become a load that will be shed….sooner or later.

The following students qualified GATE 2013
In Conversation with Mr BIREN PADHY (2005-2009)1. Your experience at NIST?
I had a mixed experience and enjoyed life on campus as if I was a part of an amalgamated
society and every aspect with respect to life was justified equally for everyone.
2. Best moment on campus?
The day I got recruited by WIPRO. It was heart throbbing and exciting as well.It was
test for a life time which pioneered the way of my life.
3. Your experience on SANKALP?
If I go back to the past, memories down the lane are colourful as I was assigned the position of coordinating
the accommodation and transport department during the fest.
4. Your favourite faculty advisor?
Dr.A.K.Panda because I’ve learnt a lot of things from him specially how to maintain a strong moral character
and about holding nerves during pressurised situations.
5. About NIST?
Just one thing “if you are ready to face the reality come forward to NIST”.
6. Life outside NIST?
As I’m working in EMPHASIS right now, life is great and fun for sure but what I miss being a student of
NIST are the classes especially the BACKBENCHER’S COUNCIL.
FROM INSPIRATION TOWARDS ASPIRATIONMs Akanksha Priya, B. Tech., 5th Sem
Hello Freshers!
This piece of writing is especially for you people…As I began writing this article, I decided to ponder over the conversation that has been aninspiration for me for the past two years, with an IITian at Roorkee.Talking to his experience, he said “Out of ostentation I secured good percentage in 12th,but at that point my life was inert and clumsy, till I went through an interview of Dr.APJAbdul Kalam, where he said-
“To live only for some unknown future is superficial. It is like climbing a mountain without experiencing itssides. The sides of the mountains sustain life, not the peak. This is where things grow, experience is gainedand technologies are mastered. The importance of peak lies only in the fact that it defines the sides”He said- “Hard work without planning is meaningless and again meaningless planning is meaningless”.I hope, I have been successful in creating a wave that may force you to dedicate yourself towards what yourlife desires from you…

So when Hrithik met Jadoo, Krish happened; when Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy (Y.S.R) met people with “hand”,Telangana happened; when Yelena Isinbayeva met pole vault, world records happened that will be milestonefor the years to come; so will something happen if this new nomenclature is taken seriously-totally revisededitions of Oxford English and Meriam-Webster dictionary, a new series of Britanica and An all new Wikipedia-the “free” (who knows what free might mean later) encyclopedia.
