Penone Versailles

After Joana Vasconcelos in 2012, it is now the Italian Giuseppe Penone who has the honor to imagine a major exhibition at Versailles.

First associated with the movement of Arte Povera, which brings together designers making use of cheap materials to reflect on the relationship between nature and culture, the artist develops his works from natural elements such as wood and stone.

Following the theme that is so dear to him, that of the shaft, Giuseppe Penone made twenty bronze sculptures, punctuating the long walk from the Royal driveway of the Grand Canal to the castle. The Grove of the Star receives "forest " of Works.

An impressive array that takes place in a perfect natural setting, closely affecting the desire of the artist to engage nature and culture.

The works of Giuseppe Penone are répartier between Castle and Garden along the axis of the Great Perpective

Spazio de Luce  “The work called Spazio de Luce measures about 20 metres. It is cast in bronze and the inside is gilded. Placed on the Water parterre, it emphasises the perspective between the Palace and the Grand Canal »

Giuseppe Penone

Tra scorza e scorza “The relationship of my work with Versailles began after the storm of 1999. I bought from the Palace of Versailles one of the cedars blown down during the storm. Its bark was used to make Tra scorza e scorza. This work is a tree cast in bronze. Divided into two parts, this envelope holds a living tree. The bronze tree represents the future growth space of the tree.”

Giuseppe Penone

Anatomie “On the Latona parterre, Anatomie is made up of six blocks of Carrara marble on which I have revealed the veins of the material to give an idea of its vitality.”

Giuseppe Penone

Sigillo  “Sigillo is a marble floor on which a carved column leaves its imprint. It’s a carpet unfolding towards the Tapis vert of the gardens and inviting people to continue their visit.”

Giuseppe Penone

Albero Folgorato  “What strikes me most in Versailles is the ordering of nature determined by Louis XIV and André Le Nôtre. It requires an incredible amount of work every day because nature continues to elude man.”

Giuseppe Penone

Triplice  “To have the possibility of letting my work dialogue with Le Nôtre’s work at Versailles is a great privilege. The garden is an emblematic place which sums up Western thinking on the relationship between man and nature.”

Giuseppe Penone
