Foothills Elementary Fine Arts Academy was presented with the 2018 Governors Arts in Education Award at the 37th annu-al Governor’s Arts Awards Gala and accepted by Foothills teachers, staff and well-wishers: Michele Knape, Denise Defatte, Denise Pryde, Erin Sample, Nancy Bielenda, April Leher, Jane Heitowit, Teri Haugen, Dana Postel; Principal Dr. Rob Ben-son, Assistant Principal Alison Shinkle, Peoria Unified Arts Education Director Rob Panzer and Governing Board members David Sandoval, Monica Ceja Martinez and Kathy Knecht. Foothills was selected from 17 non-profit arts schools from across the state.

County Education Services Agency by Maricopa Coun-ty School Superintendent Steve Watson.
An Exemplary Prin-cipal Award is present-ed annually to a hand-ful of school leaders that exemplify practic-es and leadership that contribute to improved student learning; in-volve staff, parents, and community mem-bers in developing an effective school culture and have a history of high teacher retention. Both principals were surprised with this prestigious award on March 27.

It is through the TLC program that Peoria Uni-fied’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) depart-ment gives middle school students opportunities to try a new skill. On Saturday, March 10, more than 300 seventh and eighth-grade students from across the district competed in Middle Level SkillsUSA Conference at Sunrise Mountain High. Students studied an area of interest in their school’s Technology, Life, Careers (TLC) program and all of their hard work over the months culminated at the SkillsUSA event. Students competed in CO2 cars, robotics, cake decoration (fondant and frosting), fashion design, video production, crime scene investigation and special effects makeup.

Devin Bowers in second-grade at Cotton Boll Elementary was the top contributer of $268 in the school-wide Jump Rope for Heart which raised more than $1,850 for the American Heart Association.

You can say “thank you” to a teacher — or any Peoria Unified staff member: secretary, principal, nurse, coach, bus driver, counselor, crossing guard, cafeteria staff, custodian — who has made your child’s year special — with a personalized card. There is a $5 minimum donation per “thank you” card, with one recipient for each card. You can place your order
at www.peoriaedfoundation using the online order form. Elementary schools will also distribute order form flyers to students this month. Additional order forms are available at the District Administration Center, 6330 W. Thunderbird Road. The Peoria Education Foundation will personalize a card for each teacher or staff member you have selected and deliver to
them at their school or site during National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 7-11.

Teachers Receive Grants from Peoria Education Foundation The Peoria Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports excellence in Peoria Unified, presented grants to teachers at its 15th annual Scholars & Grants Reception on April 2 at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts. This year the Foundation provided more than $31,000 in grants to fund projects integrating technology and the arts, expanding literacy programs and real-life science projects. The grants will enhance the educational experience for students in the classrooms next year.
Tickets will be available at the door for two performances of Addams Family musical, 7 p.m., April 6-7 at Cactus HS. Costumes and make-up is first-rate and sensational acting is by the “creepy and kooky” cast: Lucas Ellis as Pugsley, Nia Undergwu as Morticia, Strider Johnston as Lurch, Shelby Jeffries as Grandmama, Aaron Bristow as Uncle Fester, Teya Stone as Wednesday, and Patrick Rooney as Gomez. The drama club is directed by James Madsen.
