Acrossdiscoursesandmedia,earlymodernEuropeansencounteredadviceaboutandmodelsforinteractingwiththebuiltenvironmentaroundthem.Architectsscatteredbriefinstructionsfordesigningaviewer’sexperiencethroughouttheirtreatises,poetsnarratedimaginedtoursofhouseandestate,andartistswhocomposedprintsandpaintingsofbuildingslocatedviewersatparticularvantagepoints.Simultaneously,philosophersandscientistsdebatedhumanperceptionofthephysicalworldatlarge–forexample,explanationfirstbyAristotelianScholasticsandthenmechanisticphilosophersofhowparticlevibrationsacteduponthehumansensestocreatementalimagesofobjects.Sucharchitectural,philosophical,andscientificdiscussionshadtheirechoesinself-reflectiveviewingofbuildingsbytravellerswhodescribedintheirjournalsthebuildingsthattheyvisited. Thisconferenceinvestigatestheterms,criteriaandquestionsbywhichearlymodernviewerswereexpectedtoand/ordidinteractwiththebuiltspacesaroundthem.Insodoing,itmergesindependentyetoverlappingstrandsofscholarlyinquiry:forinstance,architecturalandculturalhistorianshaveexaminedusesofspacesandapatron’srationalebehindadesign,whilearthistorianswhofollowMichaelBaxandall’snotionofthe‘periodeye’andliteraryhistorianswhodiscusstheimaginedtoursofpoetshaveanalyzedconceptsunderpinningearlymodernviewing.Theseandotherstrandsofinquiryarebroughttogetherbyaninternational,interdisciplinarygroupofspeakersexaminingcasestudiesencompassingEngland,France,Italy,andtheNetherlandsduringthesixteenththrougheighteenthcenturies.Programme9.30 Registration10.00 Welcome KimberleySkelton(DurhamUniversity)10.05 Keynote
