1966thenewsitemdraw-ing most media attentionbeyondthewarinVietnamandKentucky’sbasketballteam, was John Lennon.Ina fitofgiddysacrilegethat mortified his Englishhandlers, Lennon had thecheek to declare to a re-porter, “We (TheBeatles)aremorepopular thanJe-sus.” While Billy Grahamgasped and Oral Robertsfainted(wethink),thestirandstormLennoncreated, let Rupp and America’sTeam file quietly ontoa charter bus and headdownU.S.25toKnoxvillewhere Howard Baine andhisbrutishbunchawaited. LOUISVILLE-CAROLINA

Astingingloss(atCaro-lina January 13), RickPitinocalledit, waserasedwhen the Cardinals ex-hausted and beat downNorthCarolinaSaturday. √ Spotted the visitorsan 18-point lead ... then, classic Pitino Ball. For showboat-ing, Antoine Walker wasbenched. √ComparedtoPitino’srelentless whip-and-drive‘em’passiontocoach,TarHeels’ Roy Williams is averitable pygmy at firinghisteamto, againstUofL,protect a two-digit lead.TheTarHeelslookedtired,outofshapeanddisjointedandtheircoachhadnoan-swers. Me thinks Williams ispre-occupied with NCAAinvestigation of his pro-gramatChapelHill.

If Tar Heel basketballplayers took phantomclasses dating to DeanSmithcoachingdaysasal-leged, the question rises:Will the NCAA ruleWil-liams “not responsiblebecausehedidn’tknow?”(JohnCaliparifreepassatUMassandMemphis),or,willUNC’scoachbeheldaccountablebasedonwhatacoachshouldknowisgo-ingoninhisprogram?

GAME GONE UGLY?

“... (college basketball)asawholeisuglyandslowandunskilled,”sayethYa-hooSports’PatFordeinacolumntheotherday. The two teams at thetop, headded,(UKand, atthe time,Virginia) “aren’thelping.” Specifically, he opines,“Kentucky’sbest attributeissheersizeandbruteforceandwatchingtheWildcatsplay isn’t “exactly a thrillride.” That college basketballhas become brutish, attimes hard to watch, andworse,NBA-ish,istrue. Buttothelatter,Forde’betrayshavingnotwatchedKentuckyplayorhascho-sentoaccentuatedefensesplayed against the Wild-cats and ignore the openfloordoingsofTylerUlis, graceful firings by DevinBooker and opportunitiescreated by both for team-mates.
