Performance Analysis

What is Performance Analysis?

• “Creating a Valid and reliable record of performance by means of systematic observations that can be analysed with a view to facilitating change”

• Only 30-50% can be recalled after observing a live performance!

Plan

Performance Analysis• Aims to capture, analyse and evaluate key

components relating to performance and provide concise feedback to inform future practice.

• Performance analysis may help talent identification and there are links with elite sport (e.g. EIS)

• Qualitative and Quantitative approaches to performance assessment

Why do coaches observe and analyse

performance?

What do they observe?

Methods for observing and analysing performance

Technology to support Performance Analysis

• Apps – timemotion, Easytag, coachMVideo, Ubersense

• Dartfish - http://www.dartfish.com/en/• Prozone - http://

Summary of Performance Analysis

Options

Summary• Technical Aspects –

o efficiency of movement and its aesthetic qualities –

o a thorough understanding of the technical demands of the sport is essential to the coach and performer –

o Always comparing to perfect model

• Tactical Aspects – o Important in most sports especially games. o Good tactical play is about decision making.

Summary• Behavioural Aspects –

oObserving behaviour and assessing why performers behave in a certain way is crucial

• Physical Aspects – o Physical fitness is a critical factor in most

sportso The physical training programmes should

match the demands made of the performer while competing

Technical(Perfect model)

• Planes/axes• Class of lever• Newton’s Laws• Projectiles• Lift = Bernoulli• Spin =

Magnus• Stability –

centre of mass, Factors affecting.

• Linear, • Angular

motion

• “Live Notation” live feedback to coach during game-> report at half time.

• “Post Play Coding” it may take all day Sunday to produce a detailed report – feedback can be made to players on Monday

• Devise a test for your sport i.e. accuracy of bowling at wicket / target putting in golf

  • Analysis using slow motion

• Specialist programmes eg Dartfish / Hu-Man

Tactical(Patterns of play,

set plays, selection of shots)

  •% possession•shot selection•points from different shots

    Analysis of patterns of play
