What is a personal project?
A body of work that originates from the student’s initiative Developed over time (grades 9-10)Demonstrates student’s creativity and learning Allows the student “to investigate and focus on a theme, topic and/or issue”Also includes a report
an original work of art (visual, dramatic or performance)
an original science or health investigation
a written piece of work on a special topic
the presentation of a developed business, a special event or the development of a new student or community organization

The role of an advisorHelps student understand guidelines and assessment criteria
Helps student develop a realistic topic
Guide the student throughout the project process (1 year)
Offer feedback at each phase of the project
Ensure authenticity of project
Year 1 timeline - 2012 Spring
Jan: Personal Project Showcase
March - April: Students complete research paper in Honors English 9 – Phase I
May: Students meet with PP Coordinator to review Phase II of project – Independent study class
May – August: Students develop and complete planning and action portion of project. Meet with advisor throughout and submit assignments online
Year 2 timeline - 2012-2013 school year
Aug: Students and advisors review projects and progress
Aug-December: Students meet with Ms. Anderson in Independent Study at least 4 times
Sept-Nov: Students complete Phase III of project – the written paper
Nov: Students make final revisions to paper and finalize visual presentation of project
Dec: Final paper and visual project due to Ms. Anderson December 10
Jan: Personal Project Showcase

Ideas from this year• Start a non-profit
organization to raise money for children in need
• Research a field in medicine and observe surgeries
• Film different Indian dances and discuss their differences and development over time
• Compose and record an original piece of music reflective of a time and technique
•Make a model of a green building
•Make an app for a phone
•Invent a new technology (dog feeder)
•Design a dress and then learn to sew and make an outfit from the beginning
•Learn to solder and create a sculpture
The next step• Students have been trained on Managebac;
encourage them to log on and show you how to use it
• Students will meet with Ms. Anderson on May 9 or 10 to learn about Phase II
• Students will meet with advisors the week of May 14th
• Phase II Action and Planning Outline due by Monday, May 21st (online)
• Students work throughout summer on project and update E-Journal online as applicable
• Students can email advisors throughout summer
