Direct Connect Overview
What is Direct Connect?
Direct Connect is an option in PETRA which provides a quick link to the IHS Enerdeq Browser
for importing U.S. Well and Production Data via the Internet directly into your PETRA project.
Several import options are available, depending upon whether you are updating an existing
PETRA project or importing well data into a new PETRA project. These options include
selecting an AOI from a map, using an existing PETRA well list, and selecting from your saved
Enerdeq queries, among others. Connection to the Canadian server is also available for access to
Canadian Well and Production Data. This document describes the U.S. connections based on
PETRA version 3.6.1. Notes related to former versions are included at the end of the document.
NOTE: The Direct Connect feature also provides options for linking to IHS Logs,
International data, and Landgrid Shape Files via Map; however, these options are not
discussed in this guide.
Authorization
Use of this feature requires subscription to IHS Well/Production data as well as Enerdeq
authorization, via a Username and Password. If you currently access the Enerdeq Browser, use
that same Username and Password in PETRA.
If you need to establish this authorization, contact your IHS Account Manager. If you are unsure
of the name of your Account Manager, you may contact one of the Customer Care sources listed
below:
Customer Care telephone: 1-800-IHS-CARE (1-800-447-2273); select options for
Enerdeq or PETRA

Import Wells from IHS Direct Connect
The Well import option allows you to select your wells from a map-drawn AOI, UWI list, or
saved Enerdeq query, among others, depending upon whether you are updating an existing
project or importing to a new project. You can also select the data to load and other import
options, as well as create reports.
TIP: For best results, always import Well data before Production data and set Map Projection
before well import when possible. IHS U.S. data locations are referenced to NAD27
datum.
Import Well Data into a New Project
From the PETRA Main module menu bar, select Project>Direct Connect>IHS US Enerdeq
or Canada>Import Wells from IHS Direct Connect…
An Enerdeq Database Source screen may display. It provides selection of the U.S. or Canada
Well Loader; this depends upon your subscription entitlements.
Select the Database Source, in this case U.S., and click the OK button.
The IHS (US) Well Loader dialog displays once the authorization and connection are verified.

Import Production from IHS Direct Connect
The Production import feature provides several methods for selecting wells, including using
saved queries, as well as various options for data to load. As with the Well loader, you have the
option to save settings for future use. Be aware that Production imports are complete historical
replacements for each well.
IHS Production Data Types
A key point in loading U.S. production data is in understanding the difference between IHS
production data types. For reporting purposes, many states often roll up production to the Lease
level, rather than the Well level. To circumvent this reporting issue, IHS developed an allocation
process which takes all lease level production and applies it to individual wells. This technique
facilitates mapping individual well production by formation and study of individual well profiles.
The IHS allocation process incorporates well tests, allowables, and monthly status to apply the
lease level production to individual wells. Any lease level production with insufficient test data
for allocation to an individual well is designated as a Multi-well production ID, and may consist
of one or more wells’ production, possibly on adjacent leases. In this case, production is assigned
to the primary Multi-well API.
This procedure results in two types of production within the IHS database:
Allocated Production: These data have undergone the allocation process and are
currently available ONLY for Texas Oil and Louisiana Oil and Gas.
Unallocated Production: These data are reported “as is” (either lease level or well level)
from all states.
Both Production Types are available with your IHS Production subscription.
Production Import Scenarios
There are two main production import cases you might encounter with your PETRA projects,
based upon production type and project area:
1. Texas/Louisiana: for these wells you MUST choose either Allocated or Unallocated
production.
2. All Other States: for these wells Unallocated Production Only is the default option; no
selection is necessary.
NOTE: For projects covering multiple states, such as Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas, you
only need to select the Texas/Louisiana production type since all other states default to
Unallocated Production. All production loads in one import for v3.6.1 or later.

Allocated Production – Texas/Louisiana Only
This section describes the entire import process for the specific case of loading production data
into any project containing wells from Texas and/or Louisiana only. This example shows the
project used for the well data import which contains only Texas wells.
You launch the Production Loader from the Main module of Petra by selecting:
Project>Direct Connect>IHS US Enerdeq or Canada>Import Production from IHS
Direct Connect
NOTE: If this is your first time using the Direct Connect feature, you will be prompted for
your username and password. See Well Data section for more information.
The IHS (US) Prod Loader initial screen displays. Choose a well selection option to determine
the UWI list used for importing production data. An option to restrict by a date when updating
production is also available.
In general, use option 1 or 2 for your initial production import, since they use all or most wells in
your project. The last choice, I’ll Decide Later, gives you a chance to think about which wells to
select before you actually import the data. Select the Source menu to reactivate this screen.
Direct Connect to Well and Production Data Import Production from IHS Direct Connect
June 30, 2011 25
The optional date restriction for updates provides the same choices as in the Well Data Loader
and works the same way.
This example uses the 10180 wells selected in Main.
Clicking the OK button generates an immediate Enerdeq request for a list of production ID’s
(PID) for the wells in the UWI list, unless you choose the option I’ll Decide Later.
CAUTION: This request can take several minutes to complete. You will NOT be able to
cancel this request!
The Status screen displays the results of the PID search: of the 13,079 production ID’s selected,
10,773 will be used in this Texas Allocated import. This is the sum of Allocated PID’s (Oil) and
Well PID’s (Gas). The Unallocated (Lease) PID’s are not used.
At this point you proceed to the General tab and begin selecting parameters for import.

General Tab
This screen provides selection options for production streams and type.
Production Streams
This section provides choices for which streams are loaded; both options can be selected.
Load Production into Standard Streams (OIL, GAS, WTR, and DAYSON)
Check this option when you want to load data into streams called OIL, GAS, WTR, and
DAYSON. The cumulative values are stored in the WELL Zone as CUMOIL,
CUMGAS, and CUMWTR. Multiple producing formations are summed together.
Load Production into Individual Formation Names
Check this option to load data into separate streams by producing formation name. The
formation names are selected on the Formations tab. A stream code, such as O, G, W, is
appended to the formation name as a prefix or suffix to form the production stream and
zone item cumulative (total) names.
Direct Connect to Well and Production Data Import Production from IHS Direct Connect
June 30, 2011 27
Texas/Louisiana Production Type
For projects with wells in Texas and/or Louisiana, you have to choose which production type to
load for those wells:
Unallocated Only – reported “as is” at well or lease level
Allocated Only – assigned to Well level via IHS allocation process
Production Stored As
This option provides selections for storing production as streams, CUMS, or both. Choices are:
Load Monthly Production Streams and CUM Values
Load Monthly Production Streams Only
Load CUM Values Only
Method to Apply Unallocated Lease Production to Individual Wells
This option is important when loading unallocated production from leases with multiple wells.
It determines how the lease production is applied to each well in the lease.
Load Production into First Well Only Listed in Lease – stores all lease production in the
first well on the lease; the remaining lease wells receive no production.
Load Production into Each Well in Lease (Subdivide) - total lease production is
subdivided equally among all wells in the lease (i.e., 6 wells in lease, each receives 1/6th
of total production).
Load Production into Each Well in Lease (Store Total) – All wells in the lease receive
the total lease production. May result in inflated production!
NOTE: This option is ignored when importing Allocated Only production.
Production Available to Load
This section displays the results of the PID query, as shown on the Status screen.
Fluid Types (Streams) to Load
This section determines which Standard streams are loaded, and which fluid types are loaded for
individual producing formations. Only the fluid types selected are loaded; uncheck all but OIL, if
you only want oil data loaded. Options:
OIL GAS WATER
DAYS ON WELLS ON Injection Data

Options Tab
This screen provides a variety of import options, as well as another chance to restrict the import
to a particular timeframe, if you did not choose this option on the initial screen.
Only Import Production Streams that have been Updated on IHS Server
This option is a repeat of that displayed on the initial screen; you can select the update method
here, if not chosen previously. Recall that PETRA saves the last import date in memory and uses
that when you select an option such as In the Last 2 Weeks.
Use the Get Counts button to check how many production ID’s (PID) would be downloaded.
MISC OPTIONS
This section provides various options for import. Check those of interest to you.
Load Production into INITIAL COMPLETION Wells Only

Use INITIAL COMPLETIONS Only from Multi-Well Leases
Select this option when you want to load production into “0000” wells for only those
leases which contain multiple wells. This restriction is accomplished by matching 10 or
12 digits of the API number, as selected at the bottom of the screen.
Update OPERATOR and Save Current Operator as Historical Operator
This option assumes the production data Operator Name is the current operator for the
well. When checked, the existing operator name in your PETRA project is copied into the
blank Historical Operator field and replaced with the operator name from this import.
Update Well SYMBOL CODE from Primary Product Code
Select this option when you want to change the existing symbol code in your PETRA
project to the updated symbol based upon current production status.
Load Producing Fm Name into Well Header
This option updates the Producing Formation Name field in the Well Header with the
value from the production data import.
Store current STATUS in WELL Zone as PDSTATUS
This option stores the well status (Active or Inactive) in the WELL Zone as an item
called PDSTATUS.
Store GATHERER in WELL Zone as GATHERER
This option stores the gas gatherer in the WELL Zone as an item called GATHERER.
Store Production Tests in PdTest Table
This option stores all production tests in the PdTest tables in the database and displays
under the IP Tests tab.
Display Detail Info in Report
This option creates a detailed report of all monthly production values, which can be saved
in your project’s REPORTS folder.
Update Non-Blank Lease Number with UNIT WELL SERIAL NUMBER
This option replaces the non-blank Lease Number with the value of the Unit Well Serial
Number, if it exists. In some states this is a Permit number. If Unit Well Serial Number is
blank, it will replace the Lease Number with a null field.
Do not use “A” in prefix/suffix to designate Allocated Production
When loading Allocated Production, this option removes the default “A” prefix/suffix
stream code appended to the producing formation name on Totals and Formation tabs.
Use Digits for Matching Initial Well Completions
This option is used only in conjunction with the miscellaneous options for loading initial well
completions. It sets the API number of digits used to match with wells in your project.

Totals Tab
This screen controls where the Cumulative values for each producing formation stream are
stored, and how they are named.
Zone for Storing Formation Totals
Choose the Zone in which to store the Producing Formation totals, or use the New button to
create a new name.
TIP: For best results, always create a new Zone for storing these data rather than placing in
the WELL zone. It streamlines data management and project refresh rates.
Zone Items
This section contains a list of the Zone items and associated names. The first 4 items store the
cumulative values for Oil, Gas, Water, and Days.
When loading production by producing formation names, each stream has a production code
appended to the name as either a prefix or suffix, as selected on the Formations tab. The code
relates to the stream and type of production loaded. In this case:
AO = Allocated Oil AG = Allocated Gas AW = Allocated Water AD = Allocated Days

FM Name From
This option allows selection of the format for the producing formation name.
Fm Name Code: uses the IHS alphanumeric age and formation code, such as 403BCGM
or 354BRNT
Fm Name Desc: uses a descriptive code such as BEND CONGL or BARNETT/SH/
Fm Name Code (Age Only): uses the IHS age code only, such as 403 or 354
Reservoir Name: uses the reservoir name, such as BEND CONGLOMERATE GAS or
BARNETT SHALE
Prod Stream Name Qualifier
This option allows you to select the application of the stream code as a Prefix or Suffix.
Examples are AO_403BCGM for the prefix option and 403BCGM_AO for the suffix option.
CAUTION: Be consistent with selection of the Fm Name and stream qualifier formats.
Changing these formats for subsequent updates can result in duplication of production,
since producing names are unique to each import. For best results, you can save your
import settings and reuse them for updates; see later section for more information.
PdCum Tab
This screen provides options for storing production cum values in the Prod Cums table of your
project. Cumulative values are computed by summing the monthly production streams.
PD CUM TABLE UPDATE
This option controls how data are stored in the Prod Cums table.
DO NOT STORE in PdCum DB: no data are stored
STORE PdCum Data using ProdID as FmName: stores PdCum data, but also stores the
PID in the FmName field and the producing formation name in the Altname field. This
results in 1 Prod Cum entry for each PID.

STORE PdCum Data using ProdID as Altname: stores PdCum data, but also stores the
PID in the Altname field and the producing formation name in the FmName field. This
results in 1 Prod Cum entry for each PID.
STORE PdCum Data using FmName Only: stores PdCum data, but only the producing
formation name is stored in the FmName field; Altname field is blank. Multiple entities
for the same producing formation are summed.
PdCum Name Qualifier
This option allows you to add a qualifier to the producing formation name stored in the Prod
Cums table, as either a prefix or suffix.
Leases Tab
This screen controls which leases are used for the production import. The default is all leases.

Choose streams as described in previous section.
Note the following parameters:
Texas/Louisiana Production Type:
Notice that the field is grayed out, since all the wells are in Colorado. This occurs for wells in
any states except Texas and Louisiana. The NOTE indicates Unallocated Production as the
default.
Method to Apply Lease Production to Individual Wells:
Recommend Load Production into Each Well in the Lease and subdivide production by
number of wells in lease. This option stores an equal share of the total production among all
wells in the lease.
Production available to Load:
The results show 105 PID’s with 25 at the Lease level and 80 at the Well level. This information
can help you select the appropriate method for applying lease level production.

Allocated and Unallocated – Texas/Louisiana and Other States
Use this import method for projects containing wells from multiple states including Texas and/or
Louisiana.
This example uses a project with wells in an AOI covering Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas.
Since this project contains wells from 3 different states, there are 2 IHS Production Types
available for loading:
Unallocated Production for the Arkansas wells
Allocated Production for the Texas and Louisiana wells (must select)
Only those changes specific to this import are described. See the previous sections for
discussion of all import options.
Getting Started
1. Launch the IHS Production Loader by selecting Project>Direct Connect>IHS US
Enerdeq or Canada>Import Production from IHS Direct Connect
2. Choose the well selection option that works best for you. In this case the option Use the
1443 wells in Main module is selected.
3. Click the OK button and view the PID results on the Status screen. Proceed to the
General tab for parameter selection.

Best Practices
1. Be consistent with selection of producing formation names and stream qualifiers
(prefix/suffix) on import updates to avoid duplication of production. Use the Save/Load
Settings options.
2. Be consistent on the number of digits in your API numbers on import updates to ensure
production is stored with the same well. Again, using the Save/Load Settings options will
help for imports in which the Initial Completions only, and number of digits used to
match the API number, options were selected.
3. Create a Zone dedicated to storing individual producing formation CUMs and related
data. This action improves data management and project performance by not overloading
the Well zone.
4. Create a WSN list of all wells with monthly production to streamline viewing and
analyzing production data.

Import Options for Prior Versions of PETRA
The current document describes the Well and Production Import options available with PETRA
version 3.6.1. Not all these options are available in prior versions of PETRA. If you are currently
using version 3.4.x or 3.5.x, check here for sample screen shots and discussion, or better still,
update to the current version of PETRA.
Changes for Well Data Imports
The Well Data Loader has not changed significantly with PETRA version updates. The main
differences in the prior versions are:
Import Options>General Tab: fewer options available
Import Options> No Directional Survey Tab
No 297 File button
Changes for Production Data Imports
The most significant change in the current version (3.6.1) of the Production Data Loader is the
revision in selection of Production Data Type. The current version streamlines the import of
Allocated and Unallocated Production, especially in multi-state projects which include wells
from Texas/Louisiana.
In prior versions of PETRA, there were basically 3 Production Import Scenarios based on
production type and project area:
1. Single Import – Allocated Production: use this option when your project contains wells
from either or both Texas and Louisiana, but no other states. Since Texas Gas is reported
at the well level, this option imports all Texas production.
2. Single Import - Unallocated Production: use this option when your project contains
wells from 1 or more states, excluding Texas and Louisiana.
3. Dual Imports – Allocated and Unallocated: use this option when your project contains
wells from multiple states including Texas and/or Louisiana. For example, a project
covering Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Use the Allocated Production type for the
Texas/Louisiana wells; then the Unallocated Production type for the Arkansas wells.
Sample screen shots and points to note for each of these scenarios, as well as other options, are
provided below.

Allocated Production – Texas/Louisiana Only
This section describes specific parameters for loading production data for projects containing
wells from Texas and/or Louisiana only.
Only those parameters that differ significantly from those in the main body of this document
are shown.
General Tab
This screen provides selection options for production streams and type.
Production Type Loaded
The availability of this option is determined by which data are available. Currently, allocated
data are only available in Texas and Louisiana. The options include:
Unallocated Only – available for all states
Allocated Only – available for Texas and Louisiana ONLY
Direct Connect to Well and Production Data Import Options for Prior Versions of PETRA
June 30, 2011 51
Sum of Allocated and Unallocated – this option applied to Texas and Louisiana, but is
no longer necessary, as Texas Gas is reported at the Well level and imports via the
Allocated option; Oil and Gas are both allocated in Louisiana
Method to Apply Lease Production to Individual Wells
This option is important when loading unallocated production from leases with multiple wells.
It determines how the lease production is applied to each well in the lease.
NOTE: The NAME of this option changed in the current version. It always applied to
Unallocated Production only, and is ignored when importing Allocated Production.
Options Tab
This screen provides a variety of import options, as well as another chance to restrict the import
to a particular timeframe, if you did not choose this option on the initial screen.
Fewer options available!
The remaining tabs have no significant changes from current version.

Unallocated Production – Other US States
This section describes import options associated with loading Unallocated Production for
projects with wells in any state(s) other than Texas and Louisiana. This example uses a project
with wells from Colorado.
The only major change from the current version is on the General Tab.
General Tab
Production Type Loaded:
Notice that the field is grayed out – Unallocated Only is the only option available, since the
wells are in Colorado. This occurs for wells in any states except Texas and Louisiana.
Select all remaining parameters as noted in the previous sections.
Direct Connect to Well and Production Data Import Options for Prior Versions of PETRA
June 30, 2011 53
Dual Production Imports– Texas/Louisiana and Other States
Use this import method for projects containing wells from multiple states including Texas and/or
Louisiana.
This example uses the same project with wells in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas, as described
in the previous section. Since this project contains wells from 3 different states, there are 2 IHS
Production Types available for loading:
Unallocated Production for the Arkansas wells
Allocated Production for the Texas and Louisiana wells
NOTE: The main change for this import scenario is that it requires 2 separate imports, 1
for each production type.
Pre-import Preparation
To streamline your workflow before importing production, you should create the following:
1. WSN list containing the wells for the Unallocated Production import. In this case the
list contains Arkansas wells only.
2. WSN list containing the wells for the Allocated Production import. In this case the list
contains Texas and Louisiana wells only.
3. New zone for storing individual producing formation cumulative values.
NOTE: If you prefer to skip these steps, you can use the Search Wells by Data Criteria
option for well selection, and create new zone option on the Totals tab.
First Import
Decide which production type you plan to import first; there is no priority to the order. In this
example the Allocated Production is loaded first.
1. Select the WSN list for the Allocated Only import – the Texas/Louisiana wells. This
reduces the well list in Main to just those you need for this import. This step is optional,
but recommended for efficiency.
2. Launch the IHS Production Loader by selecting Project>Direct Connect>IHS US
Enerdeq or Canada>Import Production from IHS Direct Connect
3. Choose the well selection option that works best for you. In this case the WSN list is
already selected, so the option Use the 1136 wells in Main module is the best choice.
Import Options for Prior Versions of PETRA Direct Connect to Well and Production Data

4. View the PID results on the Status screen. In this example there are 938 total PID’s; 513
allocated, 307 unallocated, and 118 well. Therefore, 631 PID’s will be imported:
allocated + well.
5. On the General tab, for Production Type Loaded, select Allocated Only. Choose other
options as applicable. Recall that the Method to Apply Lease Production is ignored when
importing Allocated Production.

6. On the Options tab, select the miscellaneous options of interest and skip the Change Date
section since this is an initial production import, not an update.
7. On the Totals tab, select the zone for storing the individual producing formation stream
cumulative values and the items to store. In this example the data are stored in the IHS
Production zone. The streams use the AO, AG, AW, etc. codes to indicate allocated
production in your database.
8. On the PdCum tab, select STORE PdCum Data using ProdID as Altname and use A
as the PdCum Name qualifier. This helps in identifying which PID’s relate to the
allocated production import. (The qualifier is optional).
9. Make your selections on the remaining tabs. Save settings, if desired, and then click the
Import Production button.

1. Select the WSN list for the Unallocated Production import. In this example the list
contains 307 wells from Arkansas.
2. Launch the IHS Production Loader as in step 2 of previous section and select the wells
for import. In this example, the 307 wells are already selected in Main, so that’s the
option selected.
3. View the PID search results on the Status screen. In this example there are only 54 total
PID’s: 0 allocated, 52 unallocated, and 2 well.
