wellbeing of all people in this and future generations can be secured and sustained through the building
of a just society. My understanding of a just society is one that is structured in such a way as to promote right
relationships so that human rights are respected, human dignity is protected, human development is facilitated
and the environment is respected and protected. The world today is a long way from achieving that kind of
vision. Yet we do have the resources and the capacity to move in that direction; in this generation we can
take substantial steps towards that vision. Receiving the Cork Person of the Month and of the Year awards was a
humbling experience for me – an endorsement from my
own place of what I had done and was doing. No award can match the endorsement of one’s own people. My
nomination for the award was a complete surprise to me. I am extremely grateful to Paddy O’Brien who
nominated me and who himself deservedly won these same awards. I believe these awards are an excellent
way to recognise and acknowledge the talent, the achievements and the work of Cork people. The range
of activities in which award winners have been engaged are vast. The winners have come from all strands of
Cork life which is hugely positive and goes to show we are a truly egalitarian people.”

“It was such a surprise and honour for me to be
chosen as a Cork Person of the Month. I suppose in my
own thoughts I was just a Mum, but the fact that my
difficult pregnancy, birth and continuous struggles with
the boys were acknowledged just meant so much to
me. The award also acknowledged my on-going charity
work which was quite overwhelming and meant a lot
to me. These awards are so important, as the unsung
heroes or normal regular people like myself are made
feel that what they do or go through is acknowledged
and noticed. After these awards I felt I didn’t feel quite
as alone.
In Cork, I feel we truly have a beautiful, welcoming
city and county. Cork also offers wonderful opportunities
for companies wishing to invest here as we have very
talented and professional people. UCC has turned
out some of the greatest Corkonians, my obvious
favourite being Dr Edward Kiely, the surgeon who led
the medical team who separated my twins at London’s
Great Ormond Street hospital.
For sure the Cork humour and wit got us through a
rough recession. I suppose one of the most admirable
things about us Corkonians is that through the toughest
of times we find laughter. Even in my own personal
circumstances I remember when my little twins were
still conjoined and receiving two appointments in the
post for them. They told me Hassan’s appointment
was 2.30pm and Hussein’s was 3pm – I laughed till my
tummy hurt! In true Cork style I was going to ring up the
hospital and tell them one of the twins couldn’t make
it that day! (It would have been impossible considering
they were still conjoined!!!) In the tough times of a
recession we helped each other out, and it’s lovely that
Cork still has that care for its people. We help each
other in our times of need.
We have a beautiful city and county, the friendliest
people in the world, and incredible places to visit
whether it’s somewhere like Fota Wildlife Park, Cobh’s
Titanic centre or our many beautiful coastal towns –
there’s just so much to see and do here. There was a
reason I chose to stay in Ireland for my honeymoon
back in 1999! I am very optimistic about Cork’s future
as I feel we are climbing back out of the recession and
welcoming tourists back into our county again. I think
we can still do more in advertising what Cork has to
offer tourists. Look at Queen Elizabeth – she absolutely
loved her time in Cork so we should try to get Cork
back on the map! I also feel we should look more at
what Cork has to offer. I am always blown away by
the local Cork talent I see at Cork Opera house and
the amazing sopranos we have along with incredible
dancers. We have so much world class talent here and I
think we need to showcase that more.
One of my most special places in Cork is Youghal
beach. I remember as a child having the happiest times
there and when my little boys were still joined we
brought them there and told them to smell the sea air
and listen to the waves. We promised if they survived
their separation we would return to Youghal beach on
their first birthday. Which we did! A year to the day after

of Cork people. We are a hardworking people with a
great love for city and county who have always strived
to make things better for each generation. This spirit
and determination are as strong today as ever and,
coupled with what Cork offers in terms of education,
business, infrastructure and lifestyle, I have every belief
that we will continue to work towards the betterment
and development of the county, not only as somewhere
of significance within Ireland but also throughout the
world. My greatest achievements are that I continue to
learn, both from my failures and my successes, and that
my family and I have a close and loving relationship,
and that I have been granted the grace to recognise
the vital importance of family in life. My inspirations
are three: my grandmother who taught me self-belief
and that to succeed you have to work hard; my father
who encouraged me to dream big and that success is
in following your dreams, not in achieving them – he
believed that, if you succeed, that should be treated as
a bonus; my mother who taught me the importance of
family, to never give up on what you believe in, to be
proud of who you are and where you come from, and
to always honour others. All three are proud Norries –
Cork northsiders – and they passed on that love of the
north side of the city to me. Never procrastinate, live life
to the fullest every day, be positive, believe in yourself
and the goals you set and do what you can to achieve
them. Have dreams and goals in life no matter what
they are. Believe in them and don’t be afraid to fail.
Listen to what your critics have to say, learn what you
can from them, but don’t let them dissuade you from
making your dreams reality. Remember that the person
who never tried to achieve their goals never succeeded
in doing anything. Love your family, respect others and
be the best that you can be in this life.”

behave, so it is helpful to understand and try out ideas in Step One and Step
Two before Step Three.
A healthy body, a healthy mind, positive personal behaviours and good
relationships with other people are important life skills that will help you get
the best out of your self your life, and others. This workbook is full of ideas to
help you think, feel and behave in ways that create ease and confidence.
Peace of mind, courage and real strength is within you. You can unlock this
potential through the Steps and skills outlined in this workbook. You don’t have
to wait until your life is problem-free before you can be happy, peaceful or
enjoy success. You can work at boosting your life now!
PERSONAL VALUES
Research has shown that positive personal values are like seeds: they send out
the roots and shoots of our lives. They ‘ground’ us when we are fearful and give
us wings when we need to ‘fly’. Positive personal values provide the foundation
and the strongest kind of motivation for achieving the goals we most want to
achieve. What ‘seeds’ are you sowing in your life? What are your personal
values? What kind of life are you setting up for yourself?
Questions to explore.
Take a moment to think about what what you value is most important to you
in your life.
What qualities best describe or define you?
What interests or motivates you?
What values do you want to demonstrate in your life? What do you stand for?
What are your core values ?
Some examples of values include things like: friendship, family, gratitude,
positive mind set, compassion, serenity, honesty, loyalty, giving your best,
being good to family, being good to friends, being loving; peace of mind,
contentment, respect, trust; taking care of yourself.
What qualities best describe you? What do you care about ?
What values are important to you ? What gives your life value, meaning,
direction ?
EVERYONE’S LIFEMATTERS
12
What aspects of your life are most satisfying and energizing ?
What do you want to be remembered for ?
Now think about...
How do you demonstrate your core values in your life right now?
What behaviour(s) show the world what is important to you?
Are you living your values?
WHAT MATTErS MoST IS
HoW you LIVE your VALuES.
Would you like to wake up each morning calm, rested and eager for the coming day?
Would you like to be able to understand your behaviour and remain calm and alert under pressure?
