RAILFAS GUIDE TO
THE PHILIPPIES
This guide is a vastly smaller version than the
guide I originally proposed to do in a book type
form. However it is much expanded to its first elec-
tronic version.
The intention is to occasionally grow the guide and
issue updated versions electronically, while a larger
all time version remains a longer term goal, and in
the proposed hard version.
HOW CA YOU HELP
Of course both this guide and our ‘Along Da
Riles’ magazine require corrections, updates and
any additional information.
All our society publications rely on the
generosity of people who willingly share
information, and even funds, to benefit others.
Future versions of this guide will include
rollingstock and a list of items of railfan/tourist
interest near railway stations. Any help and
information regarding these two topics would be
much appreciated.

PHILIPPIE RAILWAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Starting as the ‘Philippine Railways SIG’ in 1999, the society set
up as a means to learn about the Philippines, share information and
connect people with a similar
interest.
The group is mostly internet based, though we did go through a
small period as an official group with the plan to help preserve rail-
way items in the Philippines. With mass scrapping of the majority of
rollingstock in 2010, the idea was set aside and we returned to our
original purpose.
Our magazine ‘Along Da Riles’ is the last link to these days and
has taken on a life of its own. It
continues solely through
contributions by myself and a few
significant other people who care.
Our internet activities are vast. We are regularly emailed with en-
quiries both historical and of a more general
nature and we are happy to help where pos-
sible.
We have numerous websites accessible
through:
http://philippine-railways.blogspot.com
We also have a number of Yahoogroup fo-
rums for
sharing information and meeting others:

PASSENGER STOCK
Line closures and suspensions over the years has seen a huge reduction in
the amount of rollingstock needed.
Second hand rollingstock from Japan during the last decade saw an end to
the fascinating 7E cars built in Madras, while the arrival of DMUs from Ko-
rea in 2009, along with the promise of more second hand items from Japan
lead to a mass scrapping of many classes in 2009.
Despite efforts to preserve these important items, the last two years has seen
the extinction of the 7A (Original), 7E, 7SE and MCBP class.
NOTE: Not all classes are shown here. A small number of baggage and bag-
gage/power cars are excluded and may feature in future issues of this publica-
tion.
Clockwise from top:
R-01 Santa Rosa Refurbishment (2009):
The sole example of what was to be a project to refurbish all the NR class
carriages from Japan. Famous bus builder Sta Rosa got the contract, but it did
not proceed beyond the prototype.
NR-01 sees very little use, mostly being used for special occasions like the
reopening of a section of line.
R Class:
Arriving second hand from Japan in 2004, these carriages were classified
NR, despite being identical to the 7A below, and were mostly used on ser-
vices to Bicol before this service was suspended in 2006.
Today they mostly sit around Manila awaiting use again.
7A/CAR Class:
Arriving in the 1990s, the 7A class is made up of former Japanese 12 and 14
class rollingstock. Having spent many years both on Metro Manila and Bicol
services, they have been largely replaced by the Korean DMUs.
One very worn out set runs the daily Binan service, while five that had a
small refurbishment done (CAR class) in Naga are usually used on the Bicol
Commuter service.
PC 286
Former presidential car of Ferdinand Marcos. This historic piece remains
locked up at Caloocan, with nobody seemingly aware of where the key is lo-
cated. Officially it awaits repair on the PNR register as of 2010.
7C Class:
Nearly extinct class, the few remaining either used for works service or in
very bad condition.
CMC/CTC:
Scrappings in 2010 saw the near extinction of these Japanese cars. A couple
remain in departmental use (Manila, Lucena, Naga), a few more laying
around Manila in various states of disrepair.
Sleepers:
Arriving during 2010 were a number of single deck and bi-level sleepers
from Japan. Besides a small bit of shunting, and one mishap, these carriages
await the reopening of the Bicol line in 2011.
PHILIPPINE NATIONAL RAILWAYS
FREIGHT VEHICLES
Rail freight services in the Philippines are almost none existent
since the cessation of the private container train from Laguna to
North Port.
The rollingstock on this page is used, if used at all, mostly for
PNR operational and maintenance purposes.
NOTE: Not all types and variations are shown. These are the
main types, but there are some variations in crew vehicles
(Lucena and example) and classifications across the system.
Clockwise from top.
TF/TC/TW Tanker Cars:
A handful of these tankers still exist, mostly within
Tayuman yard, but also one very well kept example in Naga.
(2010). At last one in Tayuman was said to hold diesel for the
railcars and likely the locomotives.
The sole WT, currently isolated in the disuse Calamba shed,
was used for hauling water.
All were built in the United States, giving them a very similar
look to others of their type in that country.
GC Open Wagons:
These open wagons appear mostly used for ballast duties,
while scrap has been noticed as part of their loads during the
clearing operations.
Some are named for the Hondagua Division (see map).
FL/FH/FSC/GC Flat wagons:
All near identical flat cars, these vehicles are numerous in
numbers from Manila through to Naga. According to builders
plates they were built in Japan, the reasons for the multitude of
different classes is unknown.
BC Box Cars:
In 2007 there were officially 35 on the books, however their
actual numbers seem to far outweigh that. Today, although see-
ing little use, they can be found in yards over the whole system.
At leat two have been converted for crew use. Made in Japan.
FL Flat Cars with Railings:
See above. Appear to be just a quick conversion of only a
couple of the flat wagon types.
FCD Guards Van (Caboose):
These interesting vans may look very American, but builders
plates tell you they were built in Japan. Underframes look
virtually identical to the flat wagons above.
They can be found in major yards across the system

This dormitory car is the last survivor of the many
Metropolitan (UK) carriages built for the Philippines,
it is also the sole carriage in the country with three
axle bogies.
It has been the subject of much debate, some believ-
ing it to be the former presidential car ABB-1.
Photographs of the former ABB-1 show a much
shorter carriage than the dormitory car. There appears
to be no records kept for either carriage.
This carriage is a preservation project.
