1. The camera is not as important, but to have a good eye is key.
2. Learn the technique without getting too hung up on it. Simply learn the basics and go from there.
3. Learn by experimenting. Find a unique style, something that makes your photographs different than the billions of pictures out there.
4. Decide whether you want to do Fine Art, Commercial, Editorial or Advertising photography.
5. Look for who your potential clients are (Galleries, Ad Agencies…) and bug the heck out of them until they pay attention to you.
