Our Learning Goal:To give ideas to improve visual literacy skills in your students.

To give as many different ways of using photos to enhance your literacy programme and increase student achievement.

To demonstrate different digital tools allowing you to increase your “Kete” of presenting photos to increase student achievement.

We live in an increasingly visual culture. We are surrounded by images everywhere in our lives. By looking at and studying photographs with your students, you will help them better understand the complexities of their world.Visual literacy is defined as the ability to understand communications composed of visual images as well as being able to use visual imagery to communicate to others. Students become visually literate by the practice of visual encoding (expressing their thoughts and ideas in visual form) and visual decoding (translating and understanding the meaning of visual imagery).It is important that students learn to recognize and understand the often-complex messages of photographic images. Consistent with this goal, this website provides students with tools needed to critically examine their visual world.

By participating in picture students will: learn to appreciate and analyze photographs .

Good questioning is essential to help students get the best from their images.

Remember to move up the Blooms/ Solo Taxonomy to achieve higher order thinking.

Things to remember when taking photos.

•Place safety cord around neck.

•Look at subject closely.. Macro

•Look for contrasting colours

•Check for lighting on subject eg shading /lighting in the bush.

•Texture… foam on waves, bark, flowers.

•Colour…bright clothes

•Rule of thirds

•Build a frame around something small eg finger pointing to plane in sky

•Emotions

•Angles… where do you take the photo from-high, low, up, down. Fill the frame with a close up view.

Photos enhancing Literacy Notes

•News paper photos Look at events through the de bono hats

•Sequence photos and explain your reason for doing this. Put same pictures in a different order? Explain.

•I spy, Counting, Shapes, coulurs, alphabet etc

•Old houses, beach, scenery, local events eg balloon festival, polo game, rodeo etc

•Photos capturing real live stories

•Oral lang stories/audio books

•What do you think is the most important….. In this picture? Justify your decision. (Blooms)

•From a photo play the Why game (Building Learning Power pg 21) All questions have to begin with Why is the truck red, why is it roaring away, why are there only 3 people in it when there are more standing where it took off.

•Spidergram Building Learning Power pg 23 from a picture branch off with ideas and words to develop a story from.

•Surprising photos display photos around the school which astonish or portray something from an unexpected perspective. Use pictures that do not have clear answers. Engage pupils in dialogue about the picture… directly or by comment board. Learning Power pg25

•Guided visualation Walk through the door/gate. Look around you what do you see, hear, feel… tell us what your orld was like. Learning Power pg 25

•Learning Power pg 27 Odd Man out. From a set of photos select the one that doesn’t belong an dgive reasons for this. Shapes, houses, weather, birds.

•Scrapheap Challenge. Bring a collection of photos of objectives. What can you make from this object, spade, cloth, clothes peg, papper clip Learning Power pg 28

•Capture learning shots. We are learning too… give example

Using Newspaper Photos and find further photos relating to the original. I found www.stuff to have mini collections . Not sure about the copy right issue but can be viewed from the website through data projector or newspaper.

Use a variety of thinking tools to discuss photos. De Bona Hats are great for oral language discussion. Remember to explore Blooms with your questioning.

Generating questions Where are they, Why are they there, Where could they be going, What conversation are they having?

Sunflowers generate a lot of interesting language for poetry and descriptive vocabulary.

Other ideas for photo enrichment

Solve problems with random photos.. Using these to generate new ideas, solve problems from it eg seagull in rubbish picture

A round Robin could be used to generate new ideas.

Q and A Pictures

Write down as many questions as you can in 2 minites from a picture

Use a Round Robin to answer the questions if you can

W W W W W H could be added to the list of questions

Contine with a round Robin until the children have enough data to write a story or an oral report.

From random pictures ask students to place these in a story… write or retell. Rearrange the pictures to tell a different story. Add more complex pictures to the story
