Capturing and Converting sunlight
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
-Photo: means “light”-synthesis: means “putting together”
Photosynthesis-using light to make food
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
• Takes place in the chloroplasts in green plants (which contain chlorophyll)
• The process can be described in two steps: 1.capturing sunlight and 2.converting sunlight
STEP ONE OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS
• This occurs when energy in the form of sunlight is captured by the chlorophyll in a chloroplast
• This can only happen when the sun is shining
Step two of photosynthesis
• The energy that has been captured is converted into the energy found in food
• Radiant energy of sunlight is converted into chemical energy of food
• The food produced is glucose
Requirements for photosynthesis
• Sunlight• Chlorophyll• Carbon dioxide• Water

RESPIRATIONUsing the
energy in food
Autotrophs
• make their own food (green plants)
Heterotrophs
• eat green plants or other animals that eat green plants
Are you an Autotroph or a Heterotroph?
respiration• Process in which
simple food substances such as glucose are broken down and the energy they contain are released.
• Takes place in the mitochondria
Respiration• Food enters the mitochondria• Food is broken down when it
combines with oxygen• Water and carbon dioxide are
produced as waste products• Energy is stored in a chemical
compound called ATP until needed
