PHYS-ED Olympiad: This event is an elementary district-wide celebration of physical literacy and movement through friendly competition. What is physical literacy? There are variations of the definition in different countries, but in the U.S. we define it as the ability, confidence and desire to be physically active for life. If children learn the fundamentals of movement before the age of 12, along with gaining confidence and desire, they are more apt to be active for the rest of their lives.
4
• To advocate for Physical Education, health, and fitness at the
elementary level
• To promote physical literacy with help from community health and fitness companies
• Showcase competent and confident student athletes
• To help promote various activities in physical education for all students
• Create a fun and rewarding experience for all involved
5
The Palmdale PROMISE provides students with opportunities to live their lives to their full potential. The PROMISE serves our students through a robust Physical Education program that is being taught by certificated physical education teachers. It has been a very exciting and rewarding year for students as they have been learning the fundamental movement skills that will give them a better opportunity to be physically active for life. Participation in physical activities such as PHYS-ED Olympiad provides a friendly competition that encourages confidence to move in front of others. The PHYS-ED Olympiad is a “showcase” of different movement skills at the elementary level (grades 4 and 5). This will also guide our Physical Education program through engaging standards-based activities. The overall objective is to get kids feeling more confident and to help gain a desire to continue to be physically active as they grow older.
