Table of Contents Add Physical/Chemical Changes

Turn to the next clean page and title it Physical/Chemical Changes

Matter Review Matter is everywhere. Matter is anything that takes up

space and has mass. Matter is constantly experiencing

both chemical and physical changes.

Physical Change Physical changes occur when

matter changes its property but not its chemical nature.

Physical property changes could include a change in: texture, shape, size, color, volume, mass, weight, and state (melting, boiling, freezing).

Physical Property Changes Texture

Ex: A piece of wood that has been sanded with sandpaper.

It is still wood, only the texture has been changed.

Physical Property Changes Shape

Ex. A piece of paper that has been crumpled up into a ball.

It is still paper, but a different shape.

Physical Property Changes Size

Ex. A piece of cloth that has been cut. It is still cloth, it is just a different size

Physical Property Change Color

Ex. Painting your fingernails. They are still fingernails, they are just a

different color.

Physical Property Change Change in State

EX: Freezing Water It is still water, just in a solid state

Physical Property Change Change in State

Ex. Melting wax It is still wax, just in a different form

Physical Property Change Change in State

EX. Water Boiling It is still H2O, only in gas state

Chemical Change Chemical changes are changes matter

undergoes when it becomes new or different matter.

Most of the time, the matter cannot go back to the original substance.

To identify a chemical change look for signs such as color change, bubbling and fizzing, light production, smoke, rusting or tarnishing.

Chemical Property Change Paper Burning.

Does it produce light, and smoke? Can you return it to its original form? IT MUST BE CHEMICAL

Chemical Property Change Baking a cake

Do you have the same substance you began with?

Can you get it back into its original ingredients?

IT MUST BE CHEMICAL!

Chemical Property Change Food Digesting

Can you get back the original food you started with?

BOY I HOPE NOT! IT MUST BE CHEMICAL!

Chemical Property Change Car Rusting

Chemical Change A chemical change

occurs when fireworks are used. Fireworks are made of metals such as magnesium and copper. These change chemically as they light up the sky.
