Pediatric PittNet Study of the Month

The Interaction of Psychotherapy and Plasma

Cytokine IL-6 and Other Plasma Biomarkers in

Depressed Adolescents PI: Dr. Manivel Rengasamy

Current research suggests that depression is related to several changes in the immune system. While elevated levels

of IL-6 have been found in patients with Major Depressive Disorder, more research

is needed to see what this means in therapeutic settings.

Objective:

Assess the role of therapy in affecting plasma biomarkers in depressed adolescents, and assess plasma IL-6 levels in relation to various constructs

of depression (severity, trauma, stress, etc.)

Eligibility Criteria

• Ages 13-17

• Shows symptoms of depression

• No psychotic disorders, eating

disorders, intellectual disability, ASD

Participation Includes:

2 visits, 60-90 min., 2 months apart

Questionnaires and Interview

Blood draws (1 at each visit)
