• Management sets and keeps the operations of a business on a balanced course

• Management keeps the organization in a equilibrium with its environment

• Management is necessary to reach the goals of the organization at the highest possible level of productivity

DEFINING PLANNING

• “Determine what must be done, who must do it and when it has to be completed, so that someone can take responsibility and get the work done.” (du Toit, et.al, 2007)

• Planning is the management function that involves defining goals, establishment strategies for achieving those goals and developing plans to integrate and coordinate activities

KEY COMPONENTS OF PLANNING

DEFINING ORGANIZING• According to Robbins & Coulter (2007), organizing means to orderly and

logically classify work activities and effectively assign people to achieve work objectives. It involves the process by which responsibilities are distributed in such a way that everyone knows "who does what."

• du Toit et.al (2007), emphasize that organizing involves:

Determining what tasks are to be done?

Who is to do them?

How the tasks are to be grouped?

Who reports to whom?

Where decisions are to be made?

• Describe how you will efficiently, effectively, economically and ethically plan the assigned and allocated NIPMO management resources.

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ORGANIZING

• Organizing, involves the assignment of tasks, the grouping of tasks into departments and the assignment of authority and allocation of resources across the organization.

• Organizing can be defined as the process of creating an organization’s structure. This process is important and serves many purposes, namely:

Divides work to be done into specific jobs and departments Assigns tasks and responsibilities associated with individual jobs Coordinates diverse organizational tasks Clusters jobs into units Establishes relationships among individuals, groups and departments Establishes formal lines of authority Allocates and deploys organizational resources
