With great deliberation and thought, the PSA Board of Directors has decided to cancel all in-person meetings for the balance of 2020 due to concerns over COVID-19. All sale events have been cancelled, and our remaining two general meetings will be virtual via Zoom software. All PSA members will get email instructions one week prior to the event and again the day before on how to get to the Zoom meetings.

Our newsletter will be printed for July and mailed to those who have requested one to be mailed. The entire PSA paid membership will get a digital newsletter.

COVID continues to change all of our norms and lives. However, like our families, friends, and loved ones, our plumeria almost always make us smile. The blooming season is here—smile, garden, love your plumeria, friends, loved ones, and your families.

Itmusthavebeenabout30yearsagowhenIwasfirstintroducedtoplumeria.IwasattheTexasStateFair,andtherewasalargeboothsetupsellingcuttingsfromHawaii.OfcourseIhadtotryitanddidnotknowhowtogrowthem.Itookared,white,andyellowcuttinghome,plantedtheminsoil,andwithlucktheysurvived.AcoupleofyearslaterImetaguyinDallaswhohadplumeriasallaroundhisswimmingpool,andwhenIcommentedonthem,hesoldmeaverynicelyrootedbranch,aminitree.Thatwasthebeginningofmyneverendingurgetogetoneofeachkind—notknowingtherewasnowayIwouldeverhavetheroom,astherearesomany.

Mycollectiongrew,andatthetimeIwouldplantmyplantsdirectlyinthegroundandthenpullthemupinwinter,shakedirtoff,andstorebarerootinaplacethatwouldnotfreeze.Thisworkedgreatforanumberofyears,andthenonewintertheheatwentoutinmystoragebuilding.Ilostallofmyplumeria,someverynicelargeplants.IdecidedatthattimeIwasnotgoingtotryandgrowplumeria.

Moveforwardabout10years,andtheplumeriabugbitmeagain.IhavenoideawhichonesIstartedwithbutIstillhadNOID(NOidentification)plumeriaandalotofnamedones,aswellasregisteredplumeria.

IthasbecomemucheasierfornewgrowerswithalloftheplumeriagroupsonFacebook,withanswersatyourfingertips,afewverygoodbooks,andalotofsellersoutthere.PleasemakesureyouknowwhoyouarebuyingfromifyoubuyoneBayorothersiteslikethat.

Myinventoryhasnowgrowntoover2,000plumeria,andIhavecollectedfromBali,Cambodia,andThailand.IhavevisitedNui,Sunchai,Dennis,Preche,andmanyothergrowersinThailand.InBaliIvisitedSeradaandanumberofgrowersthere.WevisitedonevillageinBaliwherethewholetownhadlargeplumeriatreesthatweregrownfromseedwithsomeamazingnewvarieties.Ofcoursesomeofthosehadtocomehomewithme.OneplantIgotin

Cambodiawasfromanelderlywomanwhowasworkinginhergarden.Iofferedtobuyacuttingfromher,butshegaveittome.Inamedit‘CambodiaLady.’

OneofthehighlightsofmycollectingwasbecomingfriendswithSunchaiJenakomwhoisagrower/hybridizerinThailand.Henamedoneofhisplumeriaafterme—‘GeorgeStrawPassion.’

‘PenangPeach’becauseofitscolor,fragrance,andtheamazingcompactgrowth;‘GeorgeBrown’/‘MuskRainbow’hasacolorhardtobeat;‘GeorgeStrawPassion”hasauniqueshapeandcolor.Iwasoneofthefirsttobring‘JamaicaFire’backtothestates.Itishardtobeat—thehotteritgets,thedarkerthecolorsbecome.Icouldgoonandon.

ThefertilizerInowuseisExcalibur©fromFloridaColors.Ihavebeenusingitforaboutfiveyears,andthedifferenceisamazing.Iwentfromhavingsomebloomstohavingtonsofbloomsandhealthyleaves.

AllofmyplantsaregrowninraisedbedsthatIplungemypotsintoeachspring.Inthewinter,theyarepulledup,andtherootsthathavegrownoutofthepotaretrimmedbacktothepot.Theyarestoredinmygreenhouseatabout60°F.Bringingouttheplantsinthespringtakestwoguysthreedaysaseverythingisplunged.Wecanusuallyputtheminthegreenhouseinthewinterinabouttwodays—Icutoffallleavesandwithholdwater.Iwatchtoseeifanylookdehydrated,andifsoIwillmistandwaterverylittle.IliveinNorthTexasandgrowmyplantsinfullsunandhavehadonlyafewproblems.Thailand‘TajMahal’doesnotlikethehotsun.

Thisisoneoftwogreenhouseswehave.Theotheris20feetx100feet,andinthewinteritispacked.

‘Jamaica Fire’

Wepropagateourplumeriabygraftingandrootingcuttings.Graftingistypicallydoneusingtheslantgraftandgraftingontoseedlingsthatwehavegrown.Ihavebetterluckgraftingwhenthehoststockhaslightgreenleaves.Ifyouuseonewithdarkleaves,yoursuccessrategoesdown.Successhasbeenverygoodforus.Danhasitdown.Wealsorootourplumeriausingcoconutcoirandperlite,eitherinpotsorrootingtubes.IfIbreakoffabranchwhenIamoutworkingwiththeplumeria,Iwilljuststickitbackinthepotitwasgrowinginandhavegoodsuccesswithitrooting;itiscalled“TheMotheringEffect.”

IamluckythatIalwayshavealotofseedpodseachyear.Growingfromseedisalwaysexcitingasthatisthewayyougetallofthenewvarieties.Istartmyseedsonpapertowels;therearemanydifferentwaystostartseeds.WhenIseetherootstart,Iplanttheseedsintoagoodplumeriasoilmixandmakesuretheydonotdryout.ThesoilmixIuseformy

plumeriais¼perlite,¼pinebarkmulch,and½pottingsoil.Ifyouwaterandfertilizewell,youmaygetluckyandhavebloomsinlessthantwoyears.Butitcouldbeaslongasfiveormoreyears.Soplanonbecomingpatientifyouwanttogrowfromseed,butthewaitisworthit.Youwillnotknowthetruecolororfloweruntilafterthethirdbloomcycle.

RecentlyatatalktoagroupandontheInternet,Ihavehadacoupleofpeopleaskme,“Whenrooting,Igetleaveswithnoroots,whatdoIdo?”Imyselfoncehadthisproblemandamfamiliarwithhowfrustratingitcanbe.OurrootingwindowisprettyshorthereinKansasCity—MaythroughAugust.Ifcuttingsaren’trootedbyAugust,thenwehopethecuttingsurvivesourlongwinteruntilnextMay.Somedon’tmakeit,anditcanbeverydisappointing.IthoughtIwouldsharewhatIlearnedinmyownexperienceandhowpeoplemightavoid“leaveswithoutroots”inthefuture.

Ifirstsawthisproblem11yearsagowhilerooting—ofallplaces—inmygreenhouse.Ialsonoticeditalsohappenedsporadicallywhilerootingoutsideontheground(insteadofaconcrete-likesurface).Itseemedtoaccompanywildtemperatureswings—earlyorlateintheseason—butnotalways.

Itwasn’tuntilyearslaterwhenIstartedusingaheatmat—andnoticedthatInolongerhadtheproblem—thatIfinallyhadanideaaboutwhatmightbegoingon.Inmygreenhousetherewerehugetemperatureswingsfromnighttoday.Theairwasgettingmuchhotterthanthetemperatureintherootzoneinsidethepot.Thiscreatedmoreheatatthetopofthecuttingduringthedaywhichwouldhelppromotegrowthatthetip.Atnight,thebottomofthecutting,orrootzone,wouldcooldowntoomuch,andthiswouldstoptheformationofroots.SamewhenItriedrootingonagrassysurface.Thesunwouldheatupbothtipandbase,butatnightthegroundwouldnotholdtheheatlikeaconcretesurface,resultingintoocoolarootzone.Itwasn’tuntilIstartedrootingthemonaheatmat,whichkeepsheatfocusedatthebaseofthecuttingdayandnight,thattheproblemdisappeared

Aheatmatkeepstheenergyatthebottom

whereitencouragesroots.Thisworkedoverandoverregardlessofthecultivarortimeofyear.Heatmatsalsokeepday/nighttemperatureswingsto10ºF.orbetween80–90ºF.Interestingly,thegroundtemperature5–6inchesdowninmostplacesinthesummerrangesfrom80–90ºF.Thisisonereasonrootingtheminthegroundworkssowell.

Leaveswithoutrootscanalsohappenunderlights,andthesameprincipleapplies.Inmycase,Iputafanonmycuttings24/7tocooltheplumeriatipswhichmyHIDlightwasmakingtoowarm.Ageneralprincipletorememberisthatgrowthfollowstheheat.Thiscanbealittleconfusingforwarmweathergrowerswhoareusedtothinkingintermsoflightonly.Itisactuallytheheatintherootzonethatisabiggerfactor.Thebesttemperatureintherootzoneforrootingwas80ºF./26.66C.Andtherootzoneshouldbewarmerthantheairtemperatureduringthenight(minimumof80ºF.intherootzone).

Thereisalittlemoretoitthanthis,butthisisthegeneralidea.Ihaverootedcuttingsforyearsnow,regardlessoftheseason,using1000wattmetalhalidelightingandheatmatsat80ºF.IhavereceivedcuttingsinNovemberandhadthemrootedbyChristmasaswellasJanuaryandFebruary.Itisbottomheatthatoverridesallotherfactorsinrootingplumeria.Ihavefoundthatifyouhaveproperheatatthebottom(andlight)acuttingwillroot95%ofthetime.ManytimesIhaveevenbroughtbacktolifeshriveledcuttingsduringthewinter.SomepeoplehaveplantedseedsinNovemberandhadthembloomingbyApril.Itisactuallyquiteamazingtoseethatthetimeofyeardoesnotmatter.

BeforeIunderstoodthisaboutplumeria,Ilostquiteafewcuttings.Forthosewhoareinclinedtowardsexperimentation,Iencourageyoutogetasoilthermometerandapyrometerandwatchoneofthegreatestmysteriesofplumeriasrevealitselftoyou.Goodluckandgoodrooting!

Growth Follows the Heat

visitedHawai’ibackin2008ish.Iwasfascinatedbytheflower,thefragrance,andbeautifulleaves.Iwasneverintogardeningortakingcareofanytypeofplantperiod!ButplumeriagotmyattentionwhenIfirstsawit.Iboughtafewcuttings—thelocalstoldmejustpotthemup—theywillgrowlikeaweed.SoIthoughtthat’ssimpleenough,whynotgiveitashot.

SoIgotbackhome,andIpottedthosecuttingsup,notknowinghowtotakecareofthem.Iwateredthethemweekly...soonIfoundouttheywererotten,Ididn’tknowhowtosavethem,andofcourseIkilledthemall.Igotreallydiscouragedandfeltbadly,soIdecidedtomoveonandforgetaboutplumeria.

Acoupleyearslater,IstartedtogotocountyfairsinLosAngelesandSanDiego.ThereIfoundplumeriabooths.Iwaslike,ohman...shouldItryagainornot?Idecidedtogiveitatryagain.Keepinmind,Istillhadzeroknowledgeonhowtotakecareofplumerias.Andasyouallknow,countyfairsarealwaysaroundmid-JunetoendofAugust,dependingonwhichoneyougoto.ForexperiencedplumeriagrowersyouknowJuly–Augustiskindalatetotrytorootcuttings.Anyway,fastforward,ofcourse,IkilledthosecuttingsIgotfromthecountyfairs,andfastforwardagain,IstartedtofindplumeriainmylocalLowe’sandHomeDepot.Iboughtafewofthem,

again,IkilledthemallbecauseIwateredduringwintertime—Ithoughttheyneededwaterallyear.

Sofinallymywifecalledme“plantkiller”andbeggedmetostopbuyplumeria.ShealwaysfeltbadfortheplantsIpickedup.Sheknewtheywouldn’tlastlong.Movingforwardx2speed,IfoundoutFacebookhadplumeriagroups.IjoinedafewgroupsandstartedmessagingafewexperiencedgrowerslikeIreneJones,DannyKashou,MikeAtkinson,andmanyothers.Sincethenmyplumeriagrowingskillshaveimproved.I’mstilllearningnewthingseverydayandtryingtominimizeplantcasualtiesduringwintertime.

Myfirstplumeriawas‘AztecGold’...fantasticcolor,amazingpeachyfragrance.Iwasluckyenoughthatitbloomedformeinthefirstyear,therefore,Iwasabletowatchitbloom,andtosmellthefragrance.Eversince,Ihavebecomeaplumeriaaddict!

Tobehonest,Idon’tknowhowmanyplumeriaIhaverightnow—Istoppedcountingthem.Idon’twanttocountthem,butmykidsoncecountedforme,andtheytoldme“daddyyouhaveover300plants!”Iimmediatelytoldthemshhhh...keepitdown!Don’tletmommyknow!AlsoIthinktheyprobablycountedwrong.

Iloveallplumeria—it’ssuperhardtopickoutmyfavorites,butifIhavetopickafew,Iwoulddefinitelypick‘AztecGold,’‘LemonDrop,’TequilaSunrise,’‘Valkyrie,’‘Shimmering,’and‘Heirloom.’Theyallhaveuniquecharacteristics,amazingcolors,andfragrance.

Soilmix—ohboy—it’sabigtopic,I’mnotgoingtocoveritlikeIknoweverything.IndeedIlearnedfromsomanydifferentgrowers,andeveryonehastheirownmethod,soI’mjustgonnasharewhatIhavebeenusing;whathasbeenworkingoutformeinmyarea,butthereisalways

roomforimprovement.Ingeneral,Iusecactussoil+perlite+pumice(previousyears).Beginningthisyear,I’mswitchingpumicewithbark.I’mstilltestingthisnewmix,trialanderrorIguess.Inoticedwithmypreviousmix,therootsdidn’tdevelopintoarootball,somaybethepreviousmixhasbeentooloose.That’swhyI’musingbarkinsteadofpumiceandonlyalightamountofperlite—therestisjustcactusmix.Hopefullytheplumeriawilllikethenewsoilmix.

Myrootingmethod—Iliketokeepitsimple—ImakesurethecuttingiswellcallusedbeforeIrootit.Iuseone-gallonblacknurserypotsnomatterwhatthesizeofthecutting,exceptforagiganticcutting,

andthenIprobablywoulduseatwo-gallonpot.Aheavyamountofperliteandminimalcactussoilismyrootingmixrecipe.Potthemupandwrapwithfoilatbase,usestakestokeepcuttingstabilized,wateronce,setitinawarmspotwithfilteredsun,andforgetaboutit.Ithasbeenworkingoutformewiththismethod.I’vetriedbagrooting,butforsomereasonitjustdoesn’tworkoutforme.SoI’mstayingawayfromit.

IliveinMurrieta,SouthernCalifornia.Mywintertemperaturescangetdowntothelow30sºF.Imovemostofthemintothebackyardpatio.Iusedtoputthemawayinmygarageduringwintertime,butasmycollectiongotbigger,thegaragewon’tfitthemallnow.Idecidedtoleavethemoutsidethroughoutwinter.ButImakesuretheygetmorningsunlightasmuchaspossible.

Well,growingplumeriaisasuperfunhobby,butattimesyouwillgetsuperfrustratedduetorottenplantsorcuttings,etc.Thisisalwayssadwhenithappens.Soitisalotofwork!IneverknewtheintensityofworkIwouldhavetoputin.

HerearethereasonswhyIthinkit’salotofwork:1)youhavetospendalotoftimefindingtheplants,findingthecuttings,buyingonlineorpicking

uplocally;2)youhavetospendtimeplantingthem,orcallusingthem,thenrootingthem;3)youhavetowaterthem(nowaterduringwintertime);4)youhavetomovepotsaroundtoavoidcolddamage,thenmovethepotsaroundagainwhenspringcomes;5)youhavetofeedandfertilizerthem;and6)repeatthesamestepsyearafteryear.Butoncetheystartedtobloombeautifullyintheyard,thenIfeeltheamountoftimeIspendandcareforplumeriaaretotallyworthit!
