NEXT MEETING THURSDAY, November 19, 2009 PETROLEUM CLUB
President’s Message
Six Chapter members attended the 72nd
Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s “Send-
Off” ceremony held at Minute Maid Park on
October 4. We all “enjoyed” getting wet, for
it rained hard as the crowd gathered. Once
inside, everything was smooth and
impressive. The 72nd is now at For Bliss in
El Paso in the midst of training for their Iraq
deployment, about 1 January 2010. In the process of attending
this ceremony, we established contacts within the Brigade that
should be useful for years into the future.
Your Board of Directors voted to hold the November Board
Meeting on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, one week earlier
than normal. We invite the membership to attend all Board
meetings, held at Rudi Lechner’s Restaurant on Gessner just
north of Westheimer, 11:30 a.m. We eat lunch and do business
and end around 1:30.
Another notice of change is our November meeting. It is a joint
meeting, sponsored by MOWA. The date is Thursday,
November 19, 2009, at the Petroleum Club, near Smith and Bell
(details on p. 2). And our December meeting is so early in
December that we will cover the details in this newsletter. The
date is Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Vargo’s, on Fondren
just north of Westheimer. This is a night meeting, and if you
need a ride, call me or Carol Wilson (see p. 2). ALSO NOTE:
Vargo’s requires a 10-day head count, so let Jeannette know by
November 23 if you plan to attend.
Continue discussing your chapter with your officer and warrant
officer friends. We continue the life of our chapter as we bring in
new members. Time is taking its toll upon us WWII and Korea
veterans.

From Our Chaplain
SHALOM! PEACE BEWITH YOU!
"Happiness is living your
values."
That was Point 14 of Ms.
Carlin Flora’s article in the
Feb. 2009 issue of
Psychology Today, entitled,
“Do your Happiness
Homework.” She stated that
if you aren’t living according
to your values, you won’t be
happy no matter how much
you are achieving.
Buddy Scott, a retired
Minister of the Gospel and
Director of His Counseling
Services in Lake Jackson, put
a Biblical bent on this in his
recent “Pass it on” article in
the Brazosport Facts
newspaper. He quotes St.
Paul in the New Testament,
“In a race everyone runs, but
only one person gets first
prize. So run your race to
win. To win the contest you
must deny yourselves many
things that would keep you
from doing your best. An
athlete goes to all this trouble
just to win a blue ribbon or a
silver cup, but we do it for a
heavenly reward that never
disappears.” (1 Cor. 9:24-25,
Living Bible)
Another quote I remember reading
some time ago is from Mahatma
Gandhi: “Happiness is when what you
think, what you say, and what you do
are in Harmony".

A Word About Diets
We’ve got the holidays coming
up, and that means food, food,
food! In next month’s issue,
we’ll have some good diet
information for you.
But for those of you who
always watch what you eat,
here’s the final word on
nutrition and health. It’s a
relief to know the truth, after
all those conflicting nutritional
studies.
1. The Japanese eat very little
fat and suffer fewer heart
attacks than Americans.
2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks
than Americans.
3. The Chinese drink very little
red wine and suffer fewer heart
attacks than Americans.
4. The Italians drink a lot of
red wine and suffer fewer heart
attacks than Americans.
5. The Germans drink a lot of
beers and eat lots of sausages
and fats and suffer fewer heart
attacks than Americans.
CONCLUSION
Eat and drink what you like.
Speaking English is apparently
what kills you.

Things We Should Read Every Week(Continued from October newsletter)

Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful, or
joyful.
Friends are the family that we choose for
ourselves!!
You don’t have to win every argument; agree to
disagree.
If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t
be in it.
Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you
stronger.
Envy is a waste of time. You already have all
you need.
It’s never too late to have a happy childhood.
But the second one is up to you and no one else.
Time heals almost everything. Give time time.
However good or bad a situation is, it will
change.
God loves you because of who God is, not
because of anything you did or didn’t do.
Forgive everyone everything.
Growing old beats the alternative–dying young.
All that truly matters in the end is that you
loved.
