POLLUTION

Pollution is the addition of any such constituent to air, water or land which deteriorates the natural quality of the environment.

Types of pollution

Air pollutionWater pollutionSoil pollutionRadiationNoise pollution

AIR POLLUTION

• Air pollution means degradation of the air quality harmfully affecting the living organisms as well as certain objects.

Particulate pollution

Gaseous pollution

Sources of pollution

Natural sources•volcanoes•Storms Man-Made sources•automobiles•industries

Vehicular air pollution

The exhausts given out contain three main gaseous pollutants:CO2,SO2 and CO.

Industrial air pollution

The smoke released by the factory chimneys into the air contains lot of particulate pollutants

Burning garbage

The smoke given out on burning garbage releases CO2 and some other harmful gases which adds to the particulate air pollution.

Brick kilns

Brick kilns are fire-heated enclosures for making construction bricks. Lot of smoke and heat given out are pollutants.

Water pollution

• Any change in the water quality which makes it unsuitable for use by humans and by other living organisms.

SOURCES OF WATER POLLUTION

Household detergents Sewage

Industrial wastes

Oil spills

Thermal pollution

HOUSEHOLD DETERGENTS

SEWAGE

INDUSTRIAL WASTE

OIL SPILLS

THERMAL POLLUTION

• Hot waste water released into nearby streams by industries cause thermal pollution affecting living organism.

SOIL POLLUTION

• Soil contamination or soil pollution is caused by the presence of xenobiotic (human-made) chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil environment.

SOURCES

SOURCESIndustrial waste

Urban commercial and domestic waste

Chemical fertilizers

Biomedical waste

pesticides

Radiation

• Radiation is a form of energy consisting high energy particles. It is extensively used in medical fields and generating electricity.

Chernobyl nuclear disaster

Noise pollution

• Noise is defined as any disturbing sound.

Effects of noise pollution

• Interferes in communication• Interrupts concentration of thought• Lowers efficiency• Disturbs sleeps• Irritability• Damage ear drum• Lead to deafness• Bird life gets disturbed

OTHER EFFECTS OF POLLUTION

• Acid rainAcid rain is a rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic.

• Greenhouse effect and global warmingGreenhouse are small houses specially

constructed to grow plants.Global warming is continuing rise in the average

temperature of Earth's climate system.

• Ozone layer depletion
