Mary added the new numbers together and got –35.

• How many numbers were chosen?

Answer• The sum was 25, and then it changed to -35.

• So the difference between the old sum and the new one is

25-(-35)=60

• That means that Peter chose

60/5=12 numbers

• Calculate

Answer

• Let us group the numbers:

1+(2-3-4+5)+(6-7-8+9)+…(298-299-300+301)+302

(2-3-4+5)=0

(6-7-8+9=0) and so on.

• So the sum is 1+302=303 .

Problem 9

• Jill wrote a long sum:

17=17+16+15+14…+(X+1)+X

What was the number X in her sum?

• X=-16, because

17+16+15+14…+1+0+(-1)+…+(-16)=

= 17 + 0 = 17
