To develop an internal cooling device in a standard lathe cutting tool for machining different metals (aluminium, steel and titanium) in a sustainable machining environment.
Current efforts in sustainable machining overlooked the design of existing cutting tool to improve machinability. Cutting tool with embedded micro channel enables the heat to be removed by conduction through cutting insert, environmental friendly with recirculation of internal cooling fluid and recyclable metal chips and operator friendly without harmful coolant chemical.
Schematic diagram of the tool with internal manifold geometries.
The amount of the heat to be removed is determined by the fluid properties and micro channel geometries. Controllable heat removal rate is beneficial for sustainable machining of hard-to-cut materials to allow assisting heat improve the machinability.Machining cost is reduced with the utilization of current machine tool configuration
1. Local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in manufacturing industry can use this tool with minimum modification to their current process layout.
2. Medical and F&B companies can machine their products or packages without contamination from cooling fluid chemical.
