Code of Ethics for Teachers
CHEATING
For the teaching profession in the U.S., there is
no singular, unifying code. However, several
similar codes have been drafted by such
organizations as the Association of American
Educators (AAE) and the National Education
Association (NEA). Variations on ethical codes
of conduct for teachers may also be adopted by
specific state or county school boards.

According to the National Education Association (NEA), the
professional organization and labor union for U.S. teachers, all
teachers must abide by a common code of ethics. This code
of ethics is broken down into two guiding principles:
commitment to the student and commitment to the
profession. Though individual schools can expand on this
code of ethics for their teachers, they cannot revise or delete
these two principles. Consequently, the NEA's code of ethics is
the basis for all professional ethics standards in U.S. schools.

According to Association of American
Educators, the code of ethics is designed
to help educators create a nurturing
environment for students. It expects
teachers to "exemplify the highest
ethical standards" and to accept that
"every child has a right to an
uninterrupted education."

Consequences
For teachers, the penalties for ethics
violations differ depending on the
judgment of the authoritative body and
the nature of the violation. Ethical
misconduct can result in disciplinary
action from the school board or governing
body, or legal action if the misconduct is
criminal in nature.
Honesty and Integrity
You must set a good example for students
by conducting yourself with honesty at all
times. This means you should grade
papers fairly, record all of your
expenses accurately, and never use your
position as an educator to manipulate
others.
